I'm a black, female, 27yr old attorney. My cumulative GPA from undergrad was a 3.4 and my science GPA was a 2.92. I clearly made some mistakes in undergrad by not taking some of classes seriously enough. I also had family issues during my sophomore year that led to 3Cs and a D in a bio lab. However, I did get an A- in Orgo I. I finished all my requirements for med school except Orgo II. I reside in NYC and wish to go to a school somewhat within NYC or at most 2hrs away. DO is my last resort. What would you do if you were in my shoes?

Current medically related ECs: I have shadowed two physicians for 2 work days in their practices. I helped with running a blood drive in college. I do think I need a lot more ECs and I intend to have more before spending a dime on classes, etc.

Clinical volunteering with patient contact is best and be gotten at an ER, clinic, or hospice.

shadowing is also very important...

just read some thread in here and you will get ideas about what you need...we discuss the same things over and over and give the same advice.

Besides OChem II, you'll need a string of As in some upper-level Bio courses and Biochem, ideally over at least a year. Good job on OChem I. Community service and clinical experience are the two ECs that most need some longevity. If you've done some pro bono work, that is something you can include. I'd start the volunteering in a clinical environment first off at the rate of 4 hours per week. Get in some nonmedical community service too if that isn't something you've engaged in on a regular basis. Decide if you plan to include research among your activities and strategize on how you'd do that. Leadership, teaching, are other areas to (strongly) consider developing, if not already demonstrated. Any significan sports, publications, Artistic Endeavors, and Hobbies will also have a place on a med school application.
