On this AAMC chart which lists all of the applicants and matriculants by colleges attended,

What is a good OOS acceptance % to look out for that would give me a fair shot at some OOS MD schools?
(rough baseline so I do not waste money and time going for something which is extremely unlikely to earn an acceptance)
Personally, I avoided anything under 25% but it's really up to your personal preference. UCSD may have been my lowest OOS application percentage at 28%.

I used ~30% acceptance rate to include OOS schools. However your mileage may vary.

15% matriculants seems reasonable to me as long as you are at or above the median stats (depending on the number of OOS applicants and class size). This is especially true for CA applicants since most of them have to go OOS.

The lowest I applied to was 20% OOS. I basically made a list of all the OOS public schools I would have realistically liked to attend, and organized them from highest to lowest % OOS accepted. I applied top-down to as many of them as I could afford.

Remember to factor in regional partnerships like WICHE and WWAMI when picking public schools. For instance, the University of Washington is listed as accepting about 50% of their class from OOS, but that's actually because they dedicate a certain portion of each class to accept students from Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and Alaska. The percentage of non-WWAMI students matriculating to UW is more like 5%.
