What's a good self teaching gen chem book?

Have you guys any suggestions for a general chem book?
My chem prof just stepped off the boat, I think. I can't understand his "english" at all. The required textbook fully brings teh suck.

Well, I'm not a big fan of college text books (for both general chemistry I and II, I had to have Chemistry by McMurry and Fay, which isn't that bad, actually--fairly readable; I used it for the necessary minor details and concepts for the classes). In fact, I barely used my college gen chem book. Instead, I picked up a summary book with lots of examples and problems:

College Outline Series: College Chemistry
Harold Goldwhite and John R. Spielman

I think it helped me ace my General Chemistry classes. Right before the tests, I'd do all the problems there.

For what it's worth though, I heard that Chemistry, by Steven S. Zumdahl, is a good book.

I don't have any recommendations, but I'd advise against the textbook we used, which was Chemistry: Science of Change by Oxtoby...aside from dense and boring (which you're going to get with most books), the problems and answer key is absolutely riddled with mistakes.

if ur looking for a textbook, we use chemical principles by Atkins and Jones. It's pretty good IMO.

Gonick + a more traditional book with formulas worked great for the MCAT.

I just recently picked up Schaum's Outlines : College Chemistry by Jerome L. Rosenberg and Lawrence M. Epstein. I just started working through it, but it looks to have at least 50 or so problems for just about every section to work through and should be good help with the math.

A professor from Fla. State has a great set of Gen. Chem notes online......do a search for Michael Blaber.....he also has biochem. notes as well.

i use zumdahl for AP chemistry...and ppl have told me that its also used for gen chem in college
