I have kinda stupid question: I know what a D.O. is but how would you characterize a MD or allopathic physician. I'm practicing for a DO interview and am having trouble describing in words what a MD does. I hate to use the word traditional and non-traditional b/c i don't think it is appropriate when describing the differences between a DO and MD--both disciplines have more similarities then differences. What do you think? Any input is greatly appreciated! Sorry for the stupid questions..i've been doing so much research into the Osteopathic philosophy i'm beginning to forget what an MD is.

one of my friends was telling me I should describe it as:

M.D.+OMM=D.O

??

You're right ... I wouldn't use traditional vs non traditional because it's just not true. Wikipedia 'MD' or 'Allopathic Medicine.' It can get you on the right track. 👍

this has to be the weirdest question todate

hahha..

honestly wiki wasn't that great either. it also mentions that MD's meaning has some controversy.

A friend of mine after her first week at a COM sent me a text message that said:

I'm so glad that I get to be a DOctor not a prescriber of MeDicine!

One way to go about it is to think back to previous medical treatment you have had....can you compare experiences with MD's to what you now know about DO?

Think about it like this...

If you were a doctor (MD or DO), how would you treat your patients?

Very well put. Honestly, I dont think I would treat my patients any differently.... I mean I'm sure I would have a different way of coming to the same conclusion, but I really like to find problems and not just mask them by treating symptoms. I know sometimes you really dont have a choice, but... eh. Its still worth a shot in my book of lofty pre-med goals... 😀

The only difference between a DO and an MD is that the MD did well on the MCAT.

Wow, I thought residents were too busy working to post stupid comments on SDN. I guess not!

Right on! 👍

Folks, let's not stray too far from the OP. To the OP, I think most people will agree with you--in practice, both MD and DO strive to treat to a standard of care that is the same.

Heh, was waiting for a comment like that.

Come on people, lighten up; it was funny. Predictable, but funny.

O.K then...it's really easy to define what M.D is using that formula.
Just tell them the M.D = D.O.- OMM  lol. That'll do it.

Years ago, when I still lived in the "old country" (U.S.S.R) we had to study how Vladimir Lenin defined Communism. I suppose suffering for years and years from neurosyphylis didn't do a lot of good for that guy. But threre it is:

"Communism = Soviet Government + Electrification of the whole Country." 😱

BUt trying to use simple "math" caculation logic could've landed you in GULAG type camp for good :scared: i.e

Soviet Government = Communism - Electrification of the whole Country :meanie: 😉

haha thats a good 1

Wikipedia says that OMM stands for Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine.

MD's learn to heal with their hands...DOs are trained to kill with their superior palpatory skills.

Ok. We've been watching this thread for a few days, and one warning: any DO bashing or MD bashing (or anything even remotely close) and this thread is closed. And several of you are getting very close to that line. Please see the post from Lee about MD v DO threads. It goes both ways, and bashing on either profession will not be tolerated.

Now play nice.

Now we're seperate professions?

Sometimes they want to be "100% MD equivalent", and sometimes they want to be separate & different, depending on what's most convenient at the time.

Let's do some simple algebra...

M(D + OM) = DO --> DO/M = D + OM

I don't think there is any way to solve this. Crap.

M(D + OM) = DO

Look what happens when you set M=0...🙁

Bad for the profession.

What's the problem?
Equivalent implies separate and different.

Semantics. What I meant was (I thought rather obviously) DO's claim "we're the exact same as MD's" to get equal practice rights, but then turn around and tell everyone they're totally unique and distinct from an MD and that makes them special.

I have never heard of a DO who considers him or herself to be significantly different from an MD, and I know quite a few.

It's mostly an SDN-specific phenomenon. Not sure why that is, but I have a few theories.

equivalent as far as practicing rights (can do anything an MD can, specialize in anything MD can, practice anything an MD can .... etc). However, we do have different governing bodies and learn OMM ... so differences ? Yes. Equivalent ... yes!!

Hope that helps👍

How does that help? Did you read any of the previous posts?

Sometimes they want

Me like Tired's attitude. He says "we." 👍

Me no like your attitude. You say "they." 👎

Let's all sing kum... damn. Can't spell it.

I'm devastated.

Still, I'll take this opportunity to clarify that I have no problem with DO's or DO students at all, they are equals. I do have a problem with obvious fallacies or inconsistencies that are propagated on SDN.

I guess the  didn't adequately convey the sarcasm. Maybe I should have gone with a 😉 or even a 😉 combo.

Tired said "we" only in direct response to a specific comment about MD's and DO's both. Obviously your response had a different context. I was pointing out that you were correct in your assessment that "us" DO's like to use whatever label works for the moment (i.e., when "we" feel like it).
