This was asked in the Pre-Allo forum, but no one answered it seriously. I am actually really curious about this. I've searched the forums but haven't really found much.

What do you all wear to class in med school?

How dressed up do you have to get? Wou;d you feel uncomfortable going in warmups and a t-shirt? etc??

For just going to lecture people at UCONN wear everything from warmups and a t-shirt to very nice coordinated outfits.

For anatomy lab - scrubs or old clothes and shoes you will never wear outside the lab again.

On days that you have clinic or anything else that involves patient interaction you will need to dress up a bit - no jeans, nice shirt and most likely a tie for the guys. No open toed shoes in clinical areas.

Clothes. 😎

Maybe not your Sunday best for anatomy labs -- they won't get dirty per se, but they will soak in the formaldehyde smell. It comes out with the washing, though.

Also, I never wore scrubs to anatomy. We all were assigned white lab coats which the school laundered weekly. I just had an old t-shirt and my normal jeans underneath. Some students wore scrubs, but I took a look at the teachers (who wore their normal clothes) and decided to take it from them.

wear whatever you want, unless, of course, your school has a dress code. mine does. but that doesn't mean we adhere to it 😳

We were able to get scrubs for free from the hospital central supply. They routinely take scrubs out of general use in the OR and other areas after they become a bit worn. These were perfect for students in the anatomy lab.

Sorry for the aside...

Like your name BeanBean! 😀

jeans and a polo/t-shirt in lecture, an old lab coat for anatomy lab, and shirt/tie/slacks for clinicals and simulated interviews.

Have you met Chrisobean? There are a bunch of beans here.

We just wear anything that we want to. When we have clinic, we have to dress professionally, but otherwise almost anything is free game. Lots of kids work out after class, so we just wear our clothes to work out in to class.

ahh yes, i once remembered when i was a matriculating med student, all excited about the buzz and general professional atmosphere. the reality?..its a long 4 years so get comfortable. after 2-3 weeks i was stumbling late into class with sweat pants and bed-head. and respect? maybe if there is a nearby undergraduate institution you can drop the M bomb, but no one gives 2 hoots that your a meddie.

LOL. Your sig reminds me of a Donna Summer (I think) Disco song from the day - when I was in Germany they played it at the same time every morning, when my clock radio went off. Something about "Halston, Gucci - Fiarucci" (sp?).

GET OUT OF MY HEAD! (J/K).

BTW, It's a small world, after all. It's a SMALL world, after all... :meanie:

I agree - dressed pretty nice the first few weeks but by test time during the winter I was stumbling in with pajama bottoms, bed head, and a real mean look on my face because after a nice relaxing 9 hours of frantic studying you don't really give a $#@* what anyone else thinks - especially that guy in the third row with the bunny slippers!

The exception being clinical workshops where we would be professional clothing, tie, and white coat ...then back to whatever isn't in the laundry hamper already as soon as it was done.

Third Year, of course, it's ALWAYS professional (and most of the time the cursed white coat, which is amazingly warm in the summer, and amazing cold in the winter) unless you're on call or in the OR, in which case it's scrubs (and the aforementioned white coat - our school is a stickler for it).

That thong tha tha tha thong. Let me see that thong. 👍

Thanks everyone. Basically what I was hoping to hear...I can dress like a slob for the first two years of classes. Makes life easier.

i have heard that many dental or osteopathic programs require students to wear ties, etc every day. what is up with that?

Besides the convenience/laziness issue, why would you go out in public in your pajamas? do you have no self respect, or dignity? Is it that hard to throw on some jeans and a sweatshirt? What the f uck is this whole sweat/warmup pants phenomenon. Especially the girls who buy a $100+ Juicy Couture (sp) outfit, but spend all that time doing their makeup and hair.

That is the end of my mini rant.

my pajamas are a pair of boxers...so no, i wouldnt wear my only my pajamas in public.

as for the sweat pants / warmups "phenomenon", for some people it's more about comfort than style.

i could ask the same thing about the whole "ridiculous preppy dressed up" phenomenon.

why do sweat pants bother people? you know what bothers me, seeing a bunch of abercrombie clones waith shiny white addidas shoes, and girls who feel the need to pull their thongs up to their mid-torso. No, it's not hot ladies...it actually makes me think how bad it must smell when you take it off.

We were required to wear scrubs at all times in the anatomy lab. I didnt realize this wasnt the norm everywhere. If caught in the lab not wearing scrubs, even for lab exams, we were told to leave and/or change into scrubs.

that's exactly what i do! wear my gym clothes to class, feel comfortable during lecture, and then off to the gym afterwards! works for me 🙂

Depends where you go to school, if you lived as close as I do to Newport Beach, you might notice the dress standards a little higher than normal.

Couldn't resist...

"Again with the sweatpants?"
"What? I'm comfortable."
"You know the message you're sending out to the world with these sweatpants? You're telling the world, 'I give up. I can't compete in normal society. I'm miserable, so I might as well be comfortable.'"
