Hey everybody, I was just wondering what everyone's class load, work loads are looking like? I know now that college has hit having classes that have labs and lectures is making it harder to juggle, being in class, being at work, doing homework and find the very important "me time". Right now I spend 15 hours in class a week, 20 hours working, and 5 to 10 studying/ doing homework. All that leaves me with is the weekends and a couple hours each day. Although I have far less time to myself than I did through high school I find myself enjoying this stage in my life a whole lot more, anyone else feel the same?

WARNING: FRESHMAN ALERT

Just kidding. Relax!

Oh and for me it involves sitting at home, curling in bed and reading a good book... 😀

But then again, my classes do not start until the 25th😀

i have around 17 hours of class a week, and then like 10 hrs research, and 4 hours volunteering. lol u make me feel like a lazy bastard with your fancy 20 hours of work. dammit i need leadership experience, but that takes too much time.

wow if you think that schedule is tough, wait till med school starts.

I have never studied this hard in my life

ok...let the penis waving begin!!

I am taking 27 credits this year, with 25 hours of research, 14 hours of volunteering. I also work out atleast 15 hours a week and still have time for my gf.

4.0s come pretty easily for me.

15 units, 3 research projects (behavioral science related), 4 hrs volunteer a week. taking some pretty chill classes this semester to bulk up on ec's

hahaha! Yeah, I'm trying to kind of prep myself by kind of overwhelming myself while I take lower level classes then easing off work when I get into the higher level classes. I forgot to mention that I start volunteering at the Mayo Hospital after I get my TB test on the 25th!!!!

I wouldn't say you were lazy at all, that is a good load. You are also probably in more demanding classes than me so I'm sure they are more draining.

Lucky you, I've already been in school for a month. Its going by quick. By the way, I'm not quite a freshman; through high school I took classes at the community college down the street so I'm off to a good start with 21 credits before my first day of college full time 🙂

Volunteering is no work. When I go into the hospital to do clinical observations or volunteer, that's my happy time... because I don't have to cram information into my head...

Yeah, I agree. I've done a some shadowing already and it is not a stressful experience but I would like to work hard while volunteering so I impress the doctors so I can get some great recommendations or so I can find one to take me under their wing.

Still a Freshman in My book. Your first year is your first year regardless I think.

and you expect to get into med school with this weak schedule? 😀

My last Q had:

16 hrs/week class
15-16 hours/week work
10 hours/week research
5 hours/week cancer center volunteer
5 hours/week as officer (planning/participating in pre-med club events)

i love this Q too though

No kidding! I mean c'mon! I am taking 30 credits, working full time, so 40 hours a week, doing research, I practically live at the hospital I volunteer so much, I have two full time boyfriends and a very hectic social life. I also volunteer at 3 homeless shelters, run my own non profit organization, I am president of 4 clubs on campus and in charge of a fund raising marathon event. On top of that I am in the Big Brothers Big Sisers program and help with 7 kids. I also always get a full nights sleep - 8 to 10 hours - to ensure that I am always fully rested and alert. I have a GPA of 4.5 and expect to get a 51 on the MCAT.
You'd better stop slacking if you ever want to amount to anything. Pick up the pace or you'll get left behind buddy! :scared:

I should just give up now... there is no way I could ever even come close to that.

I shall wave my uterus, if you don't mind...

40 - 60 hours of work / week, project managing and/or collecting data for 6 studies in a totally underfunded and insane surgery department. I also run a volunteer program for the department.

Mother to a 2 year old who lately has a chronic, never-ending case of head lice, thanks to his pre-school. (And yes, we have them, too. You may now refer to me as "Lice Lady, Queen of the Head Bugs.")

When I'm not scraping lice out of my family's heads or scaring the pants off of the attendings, residents and volunteers (will I grant the data today? or not? you know, we who own the data own the world...), I'm filling out secondaries, doing laundry, cooking dinner, grocery shopping, negotiating car repair bills, or obsessing on how I'm going to sell the house in a weak market if I get into medical school.

I'm tired just writing that.

I always feel like i caught lice when I go to berkeley.

My schedule is pretty weak compared to you others, especially the one before me, but i shall share with you anyways. Biochem class, microbiology, physics second quarter, and and english lit class. 12 hours of research and 6 hours volunteering a week. Probably the most chill schedule here, especially with chubbychasers in the mix:laugh:

As well you should. I am Lady Lice, Queen of the Head Bugs, ruler of Dirty Hippy Land! And I really should go to bed now...

lol, ironically we have very very similar schedules this semester.

I got lice in Elementary school too...it SUCKED. The main thing I remember was the medicated shampoo....oh how I hated that stuff!!!! 😡:scared: Whatever you do, be EXTRA EXTRA VERY EXTRA careful that you do not get it in your 2 yo, or your, eyes!!!!!!!! I CANNOT emphasize that enough!!!! It is, literally, hell in a bottle! It will ravage your eyes like fire and acid and everything in between....:scared:😡

Right now I'm doing:

12 hours a week in class
(gen. chem, zoology, calculus-based physics, sociology)

9 hours a week in labs
(chem, zoology and physics - duh)

10 hours a week at work

With around 4-5 hours of sleep each day, the rest of the time studying and writing reports.

I'll probably volunteer at a hospital soon-ish, but for now that's it.

40 hours a week working. 15 hours a week watching mindless TV. Every waking hour stressing out about getting into medical school.

I'm not in school anymore, but I do work. The last couple of weeks I've been working about 60 hrs/week so I can make enough money to justify missing work when I fly out for interviews. Although, I'm an EMT, so "working" can also mean sleeping at a station...:meanie:

Wow, it seems like everyone is an overachieving robot in this topic. I take 12 credit hour classes, that's about all that is neccessary. Usually 12-15 credit hours is the standard, but no offense, but i hope none of you are like those nerds who devote their whole lives to learning and ****.

I think the rest of us "nerds" are devoting our current lives to getting into med school, and after that probably being good doctors.

For my first two years, I took 21 credits/semester (my college's maximum). I'm an engineering major, but I ALWAYS took one humanities/social science course to break it up.

Junior year 1 and 2 (I was a junior twice-- thank you mononucleosis!) was when I kind of went off the deep end. I started an evening paramedic program at the local community college and began working 20 hours/week as an EMT in an urban area. I volunteered between 12 and 24 hours a week.

Senior year just started, but right now I'm taking 24 credits at my college and 5 at the community college, I'm completing an internship, and I just started a company.

For me, I love being busy, but I've become extremely, extremely organized. One of the best tips I can give is to push yourself, but not at the expense of your grades. I let my grades suffer a little to truly experience everything I could, and I wouldn't trade that for anything.

Also, buy a smart phone, one into which you can link a calendar. What works for me is to use Microsoft Outlook's calendar on my computer and then I sync it with my phone; everywhere I go, I have my calendar with me. It's saved me countless times.

Most importantly, make sure you have fun. I try to take one night a week to go out with friends. Do not underestimate its necessity.

15 credit hours (some of them blow-offs). ~20 hours/wk research. ~10 hours/wk work. With the occasional disruption for med school interviews.

All in all one of my lighter semesters.

watching football all day sat and sun 😀
gotta have a break some time

As long as you have time to your self on a heavy load, you'll be alright. 15 hours.

Most men in the real world pride themselves on how big their **** is or how many girls they're been with.

Most pre-meds pride themselves on how busy their schedules are.

Never understood it. Does being very busy make you feel good about yourself?

Just a random question. What exactly denotes a "credit hour"? My school (which is on the quarter system) just uses credits, with most courses being 1 credit, some being 1/2, and few if any being more than 1. On AMCAS, most of my classes were converted to 2.70 credit hours, is that the standard?

At my school a credit hour generally seems to be an hour of class per week (most classes are 3 or 4 credit hours). The exception is lab classes where one credit hour seems to equal three or four hours in lab.

Course load of 18hrs/week
1. Biochemistry - Intermediatary Metabolism and Labs
2. Biotechnology Labs
3. Physiology
4. Psychopharmacology
5. Geographies of Health

...will start volunteering at hospital soon...

...and 7-9 hrs of sleep 😛...

No, it makes me feel tired. What I take the most pride in is my ability to sleep with my eyes open, so that I always look busy.
😉

yeah kind of, at least for me it makes me feel like when I get home I deserve the relaxation.

i don't know how many hours and w/e, but this is my usual daily routine:

7:30 am - wake up
8 - 9 am - swim
9 - 9:30 am - grab breakfast
10 am - 2 pm - class/lunch/class
2 - 7 pm - work at my part time job
7 - 8 pm - dinner
8 - 9 pm - band practice
10 - midnight - homework/prep for next day/sleep before midnight if possible

my schedule's not that bad imo, but it is my senior year, so i'm not doing a lot of crazy stuff

^ where do you fit in sdn?

18 hours of class.
15 hours of being a lab assistant.
Several hours just being involved in organizations.
xx hours learning to be a good husband (I'm relatively new).

My easiest semester by far.

^ where do you fit in sdn?

haha i'm usually multitasking while i'm eating, or i check late at night if i don't have much homework to do.

and my band practices tues/thurs, so on other days i'm usually done by 8 pm.

18 credits, 4 hours a week volunteering at a hospital, 2 hours a week reading to middle schoolers.

wow, no one's on the quarter system?? I dont start school for another two and a half weeks...
until then, i'll be filling out the last of my secondaries, hitting the gym, finishing seasons 2 and 3 of Arrested Development online, and playing video games (yeah im kind of a nerd..) 😉
