Only 14 categoricals this year, down from 17 in previous years (although, still 21 in the PGY-1 class because the number of prelims went from 4 to 7). 2 unfilled spots going into Match Day.

Is the program being restructured, is it losing funding, or something else going on?

I'm also wondering what's up with Olive View (UCLA-SFVP). How did they have EIGHT unfilled spots in the scramble??

Other Southern California programs with similar reputations like Cedars and UC Irvine easily filled. So what the heck happened to Harbor and Olive View?

My only possible explanation is that Internal Medicine applicants are starting to turn away from county programs (at least in California)? Both Harbor and Olive View are known for hard work and a lot of scut, without the added benefit of a pretty private hospital (Cedars) or an academic setting (UC Irvine).

That's what happened (having unfilled spots and have to go through scramble) when they turned me down...

The LA Times article that came out right before the rank lists were due affected the match for all the county hospitals. Harbor and Olive View are not in danger of closing. The reputation for too much scut is unfounded. Harbor has a phlebotomy team for blood cultures for most of the day, none of the painful night float, churns out a ton of research (basic science and clinical) and has some of the happiest residents. Ask the graduates about their residency experience, and they'll tell you they came out of residency with great friends, great training, and great jobs/fellowships. That's pretty much everything you want out of a residency....

There are two types of programs that don't fill.

1. The ones who were being too elitist and didn't rank people they interviewed (ie Duke and UCLA:Harbor)

2. Programs that genuinely have a difficult time filling

People make the mistake of assuming that unfilled programs all represent number 2. above
