What's it like in LA?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For some of us who haven't been there, could those who live in LA write something about it?

We talking Louisiana or Los Angeles? I would guess the latter but your form Georgia so who knows.

Let's see (Los Angeles):

Traffic, hot weather, nice beaches, high gas prices, not that bad of a place except there are the communities that are dangerous at night, I'm sure every place has it. Nice places to go hang out such as theme parks, clubs, restaurants. Maybe if you want to know specifics, let me know.

If you are staying near USC campus (Dental), the community is not a nice place.

Nice weather. Nice smog. Nice traffic jams.

Basically its ok if theres no traffic.

You guys forgot it has the hottest females evaaaaa 😍

hottest- maybe
fake, mean, slutty, too-much-into-themselves?- definitely!

lol personally, i hate la.. a lot of pretentious wannabe-famous ppl who walk around a stick stuck up their *** and don't know how to say hi or smile.
But again, there are lot of nice, friendly ppl too
too hot traffic is so bad, dont even try to drive anywhere between the hrs of 7am-8pm lol

you should come live in indy for a lil.

i'll take all that you said about LA any day.

do yourself and your wallet a favor and dont (DO NOT) move here...
we

I'd prefer Cali over any other state anyday.

Its Florida without all the hurricanes basically...but still with the hot girls and the great night life and extracurricular activities going on.

lots of good food. 🙂 traffic... ehhhh u get used to it. but the environment is very lively. lots of things to do... you're never bored.

not all of la is as nice and pretty as people make it. that's basically only west la. the rest can be okayyyyy, and not too safe haha. now if you're talking about usc or ucla for dental school then i'd say from experience, ucla is one of the nicest campuses in a fairly nice neighborhood. weather is warm and sunny year round if you like that, and of course as people have mentioned, there are beautiful women all over the place. a car is a necessity. there are MANY places to eat and things to do if you have transportation. nice clean beaches are a good drive away. there are many small cities around that you can go to as well. la is very superficial and traffic sucks A LOT, i'm not going to lie. as long as cars are moving, then you're okay. b/c it could be worse. but, it's also a great place to be at if you like the busy fast paced city life. i give la 👍

it's too hot in LA. You will never see snowing.

But, at night or evening, the weather is just perfect. The temperature drops quite a lot during night or evening.

U can enjoy any foods, and the point is there are a bunch of restaurants u can choose.

I doubt if I can say girls are so hot in LA. But, u can enjoy a plenty of entertainment in LA.

Near LA, there are also many places to hang around.
1. Laguana Beach(Irvine) 2. Car show (San Diego) 3. Santa Monica Beach, and many many beaches.

Of course, there are many Asians, and there are many people from all over the world. 😎

Laid back in the afternoon!
Party time in the evening!

A lot of street car racing, and people ride their car so fast on highways.

Personally, I like LA because there is "Korea town". And, the reason I like the culture in LA is really all about personal stuff. (Subjective)

Actually, I would say LA is great place because u can also get rid of ur stress during ur studies "for sure".

I go to school in LA, ive been here for 4 years and I am originally from Northern California (silicon valley). Let me tell you everything is like night and day from socal to norcal. People in LA are completely different from the people in norcal. Let me make a list:

LA: people are snobby, self centered, and FAKE
Bay Area: People are smart, dont care about what others think, and 100% real

Weather: It is a little bit colder in the Bay Area but seriously its like a few degrees and i dont care what people say it does get cold in LA and it does RAIN.

Overall if you had the chance (and you did not get into UCLA) I would hit up Norcal schools if anything in Cali. California is probably the nicest state but there is a HUGE difference between norcal and socal so choose wisely.

GOOD LUCK!!!!!

I go to school in LA. But, I have met many people from the bay area. Let me tell you everything is like night and day from norcal to Socal. People in LA are completely different from the people in norcal. Let me make a list:

thanks for the sarcasm bruinlove....u live in UCLA a small bubble of LA with a crap load of people not from LA. Not to mention you probably never go out enough to actually witness the people and culture outside UCLA.

Read your previous post again, buddy. You are overgeneralizing things based on your short experience. Sure, there are many snobby people in LA. But, they don't represent everyone in the city of angel. I know many norcal people, but many of them are dumb as hell even though they go to UCLA. But, do I think all norcal people are brainless because of them? Hell no. 😉 And fyi, I'm from Socal, so I know people outside UCLA.

california in general is nice. if you come here, you can experience both socal and norcal. if you don't mind a 5 hour drive b/w the bay area and la or a 1 hour flight, then you can experience first hand the difference in weather, schools, and things to do as everyone has listed above. as for the debate above, haha, LA and the bay area both offer a very diverse, cultured, and FUN lifestyle that i am sure you'll enjoy. no matter what, i think that you'll be happy at any of the locations of the excellent dental schools located here. the only obvious difference i can think of right now is the weather. obviously san francisco schools are cooler and gloomy much of the year. it's the truth. los angeles schools are warm and sunny much of the year. so...you like it warm or cold? good luck!

It's true that north cal seem to be a lot nicer than us south cal, and North Cal people seem to drive a lot safer too.

It's the first place I stayed when I made "a commitment to study in US".😎

Anyway, I remember when I moved to South Cal, I gradually felt as if I am at home. (Korean food was much better, too!) 😛

But, too fatigued & tired in the afternoon in South Cal. Stronger UV, and better summer traction on the road! 😎

One more thing, when I need a cigar from a stranger in SF, I remember I passed a quarter for that. I did the same thing in NY, but people just gave me a cigar without taking my quarter. (Actually, some does, others don't !)

SF area seems to be cleaner, and have better weather.

On the other hand, LA area is more full of cool people, and it's fun to live in LA. In fact, I would call this area "Hollywood"

Living cost SF👎 > LA

However, I recently discovered NYC in Fall is AWESOME! Why I didn't know that? 🙂

Trust me!
When u drive, there are so many many hidden places that are worth hanging around all over the states! (At first glance, it look as if it is barren area)

AND my average post becomes solid "1.0+"

For the record, I never said Socal is better than norcal. I just wrote the opposite of osimsdds' post.
And I meant that it's wrong to assume that socal people are snobby, selfish and fake😕 after a short period of time being here.

i've never been out to LA but i am excited to be visiting for an interview at sc in november. i plan to keep an open mind about the place and gauge everything and everyone there accrodingly. i'll be staying with some guys who at at lusk, so at least i'll have some good tour guides to show me around for teh weekend. hopefully i will attend an sc football game as well!

i am interested to know, and I am sure that i can get a sense of it when i am there, but is LA at all friendly to students who commute via bicycle? what about moped?

Thanks for everyone's input. I'm excited to visit California, though I am a little bit nervous about how big the city is (I'm from a small town). I've only seen LA from that million dollar listing show, so I'll hold all judgments until I actually visit the place! Can't wait to see the beach 🙂

Would you say Loma Linda fits the LA description? Or would it, and the surrounding communities of San Bernardino and Riverside, have a different feel to them?

loma linda and the san bernardino area is different than LA. loma linda is a small city of about 20-30,000 ppl. from what i remember of loma linda, it doesnt feel like la at all (i live in la)

But, there is "a LA-like gradient" from Loma Linda Area to LA.

What I mean is.......

First, it took 1hr by car from Loma Linda Area to LA. (At night, if u push really hard on the freeway, u will notice it's very very close....)

From LLU, if u ride toward the oppsite direction, u will reach Las Vegas.

LLU------------>LA
Riverside--->Pomona(Western Health University D-school), Hacienda--> LA

I would say it's very very close from LA. 👍

Then, Riverside, where Loma Linda is located at, is mixture of rural & small urban area. It's also pretty close to University of Riverside in California.

In my opinion, living in LA cost a lot, and sometimes unsecure. (Gun fire, Gangs, etc) Instead, u can study hard at LLU in a quiet & safe place, and take a rest in LA without any difficulty. 😀

But, people are different, so I don't know which kind of life style you are yearning for. (And there may be even better places for me......let's see!):laugh:
