I wasn't sure if this was the best place to post this but here goes

So at this point in my third year I think I have decided that I like urology, which, as we all know is fairly competitive. I'm also a DO student so that basically limits me to the DO uro residencies, which doesn't bother me too much. I got a pretty good Step 1 score and am not sure whether to delay Step 2 so the score is released after applications. To be honest, I'm still a bit muddy on the timeline of when to do what in the upcoming year and a half. Now to throw a wrench in the works, I'm also trying to figure out a good date to get married. So far I was thinking June-ish during the transition between 3rd and 4th year but of course this is influenced by when to take the Step 2...

So any advice would be awesome, even better if anyone has any personal experience too.

The summer between your 3rd and 4th years is the only time during 4th year when you will actually be busy. You will be doing electives and/or subIs in urology to 1) get letters of recommendation and 2) demonstrate interest to give credence to your application. You can't be crying to your team that you need to take off time for your wedding and all the planning that goes with it around that time - you need to be present on your rotations and show them your A game! I would push off the wedding until spring of 4th year. You will literally be doing nothing except coasting at that point. (Winter is also a better than summer, but you will be interviewing around that time).

In terms of taking step 2, I don't have experience with the urology application process but some specialties like to see step 2 before you apply (e.g. some of the PDs in medicine-y type fields like peds rank step 2 as more important than step 1). Ask your home urology program if they favor applicants who already have step 2 prior to applying.
