What's The Best State To Be A Pre-Med?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
NYC has most of the opportunities for NY state. Since most of these are private schools with the same price for out of staters, Northern NJ and Conneticut reap this benefit as well.

This is a great table, very revealing. However, one thing you have to consider with Washington is that about 15 spots each at UW are reserved for students from Wyoming, Idaho, Alaska, & Montana. So actually, the odds are even WORSE than those shown for Washington residents!

Thanks for pointing that out. I knew that they had such an agreement, but I was not sure about the totals. Colorado has something like that too, so I thought long and hard about how Wyoming would fit into the table. I didn't really know if the spots for specific other states were included as in-state or oos since I was under the impression that they didn't charge them oos tuition rates. In the end, I thought it best to just use raw MSAR data coupled with wikipedia populations to avoid too much personal interpretation.

When I first started, I tried to guestimate how many med school applicants each state has, but I never really knew how to go about that. I went by total population under the assumption that a similar percentage of the population in each state is interested in pursuing medicine. That's probably not true, but I couldn't really think of a good way to control for that variable.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say my home state of Maine is not the best of the 50. We only have UNECOM, which charges OOS tuition to Maine residents and everyone for that matter.

Lots of good schools in surrounding states though.

Haha, I'll go on a limb and agree with you and say that New Hampshire isn't one of the best either. Dartmouth = private obviously, although the MSAR says that out of 49 NH applicants, 7 matriculated, so I figure the acceptance rate for NH residents is around 20%! Though with that kind of a sample size that's just a random number.
