given that 99.9% of us are over 21, or even a good chunk who are non-trads like me who are not even dependents anymore? I figured it was just for simple statistical purposes - like how many docs come from single-parent homes - but was wondering if someone knew otherwise.

Well, there's the 0.01% that's under 21 where that matters. But also, it's really to determine what kind of background you had while growing up (in a roundabout way). There's a difference between having a parent who got a doctorate and one who never went to college.
