Sorry, I'm not familiar with the residency match process...but what does "traditional rotating" mean? I was looking through some match lists and there were quite a few there, is that just a way of taking a year "off" if you didn't match into the residency of your choice? thx.
 
I think if you do a DO residency, you take one year to "rotate" through the primary care fields, much like you did in med school, but you're an intern now. So if you wanted to do pediatrics with a DO residency, you would do one year traditional rotating, then two years of pediatrics, and be certified in peds after you took your step 3.
 
many primary care residencies are "fast-tracked" these days...ie incorporating the rotating internship as the first year of the 3 year residency.....however there are a lot of specialties (MD and DO) that require a separate internship year and you start your first residency year as a PGY-2
