What's up with AZCOM?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Overall, scores have been going up the past few years.

Ten years ago we used to interview people with 2.75-3.0, but not many of them. They were clearly different from the interviewees who had GPAs > 3.0, and not many of them got accepted.

3.0 is now our floor, but typically, we like 3.25+

Do you foresee scores every going back down for DO school? What were the numbers acceptable for an applicant back when you started interviewing applicants for DO schools 10 years ago?

Hmm, I just called their admissions office and I got the same response as the original poster. They are not interviewing anyone below a 29, "because that was our average last year." I tried asking about later in the cycle and I was given an answer with a tone of "likely no, but we don't know." I asked about first-generation college students and economic disadvantages, to which she said decisions are purely academic, but I'm welcome to write a letter about it. I asked about further LORs, they said no. I asked what they would like to see from me as the cycle progressed. They pretty much told me to retake the MCAT or bust. I have a 27 with an 11 in verbal.

I thought with a good GPA and strong scribing background, a 27 would be fine given that average implies some range of a point or two in either direction (like you said), even if the bell curve distribution is steep at the average.

I'm remaining optimistic that they'd have to interview some below a 29 later on, but honestly I feel like I have a better shot at the two U of A's at this time as compared with AZCOM.

In your experiences Goro, is the response "we're not interviewing below a 29" more of a trait of the early cycle like others are mentioning in this thread, or is AZCOM really trying to separate themselves as the cream of the crop this year?

Thank you. I don't like to say I told you so.................. but it sure does feel good to be validated after a bunch of people told me in this thread that I'm making exaggerated claims and that I have no clue about the medical school admissions process. Someone even accused me of sh*tposting, wow!

I've visited AZCOM several times and I've read several recent AZCOM application thread cycles to completion. I've found out that AZCOM is a lot like Mayo when it comes to the intense love and devotion that it's students have towards their school. This could be due to a number of reasons. Lovely spacious campus, great personable professors, efficient administration, impressive residency match list etc..... it's probably due to all of them. Also, it's undeniable that a lot of qualified west coast applicants who are rejected from MD schools end up at AZCOM. Not to mention the ton of premeds from Arizona State (one of the biggest state schools in the nation) and U of AZ. Then there's Arizona itself, a great place to live. Arizona is like Cali...except less expensive and less crowded.

clinical rotations are supposedly a big weak spot for AZCOM. I've seen a number of grumblings about it over the years on this site.

The ongoing trend in all professions leaves medicine as the one and only stable career path which provides a high income (barring exceptions). As long as this holds true, competition simply goes up for medical schools in general and of course DO schools are no exception to this.

You want to hug it out? When you start out a thread with literally no evidence of this and then decide afterward to explain your logic? Let me help you out: When there hasn't been any formal announcement on their website, do you know what you could have posted to convince more people?

AZCOM emailed me and told me I was waitlisted because their most current MCAT average is 29 so they don't want to interview anyone below that.

How about post that email with your info removed? You basically made some claim then sucked AZCOM off informing us how good they are, then expected us to just believe you off your first post? Even if you're right, I stand by my statement.

Fair point. However there's also a nice way to react to someone who posts information without evidence. Ask them for the evidence instead of putting them down.
