What's up with Penn State?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Every month there is an advertisement in the back of every emergency medicine journal and throwaway for Penn State in Hershey. Those advertisements have been present for many years. Can anyone tell me why this hospital is always looking for staff?

I know they lost some faculty awhile back when they had a change in director. Overall, their salary isnt as good as some of the other area community residencies from what Ive been told. Now that info is 2-3 years old, maybe there are other factors at play.

When I was on the trail last year I did quite a bit of IVs in that area except Penn, but I unanimously heard negative things from other applicants about the program from an EM standpoint.

I went to med school at Penn State. The ED was always held in poor regard amongst the other departments when I was there. At one point, admin appointed an EM chair who was an attending in the IM department who had no EM experience. Admin just had no respect for the ED, and neither did pretty much any of the consulting departments. Now this was before the days of their residency, which started my last year of medical school. I'm sure over the years at least some of the politics has to have changed there, since its been over a decade now that they have had an EM residency.

I will say, outside of that, I loved my time in Hershey and really liked my medical school training there. It was overall a great hospital to work at.

I was also told to steer clear when I was on the fellowship hunt. I, too, noticed that they have an ad in every journal, every month. Time for a shakeup.

Isn’t it kind of in the middle of no where too?

Middle of nowhere is relative. It’s surrounded by beautiful farms, but Harrisburg is only about 5-10 minutes to the west. York and Lancaster are about 30 minutes away as well. So more like middle of nowhere surrounded by small cities on all sides.

Every time I’ve been up to Hershey it’s been great...there will always be a fair number of tourists there.

The other big hospital system that I feel is truly in the middle of nowhere is Geisinger, in Danville probably about 40 minutes north of Hershey. Great hospital and people...but the city is ittybitty...

No, that's not relative, that's how you define "middle of nowhere". I don't think he was assuming there was a desert nearby lol

It's for some people, sure, I knew a girl that was super cute excited to work in nowhere, montana simply because she wanted a more rural life. But it's not for everyone, certainly.

Okay. I think we disagree on the term “relative” here. But if you feel the need to make known why I’m wrong here, go ahead.

Is Dorney park in hershey? I remember going there as a kid, had a blast. Great memories from that...

Getting back on track, can anyone speak to the emergency department itself? Someone mentioned that the pay is low. How about the availability of ancillary support? Is the equipment outdated? Do the emergency physicians have a difficult time obtaining MRIs? Is there pushback when admitting patients? Does the medical director send out weekly emails stating that the length of stay times are too long despite there being zero support from administration to change throughput? Do physicians feel like they have a voice within the hospital?
