I still give the nod to propofol over Precedex. Much quicker onset/offset. Established use in kids. Though not the best in neuro & cardio patients, prescribers have much more experience in titration. Isn't limited to 24hrs like precedex and has anti-emetic effects.

Propofol's doing fine in my neck of the woods. We ain't got no Precedex at the VA Spa...
The lead tech at my hospital commented that the "shortage", as he put it, was something to do with AstraZeneca getting in hot water with the whole MJ thing... dunno how right he is or isn't.
We were out of vec and thiopental forever. Annoying as hell.
So they are getting sued because some idiot medical staff used vials for multiple patients? That makes NO sense.
What if their profit margin on Precedex is significantly larger than on Propofol and they just wanted to push people in the right direction?
I worked for one of the few manufacturers of propofol and that was their gold mine drug while they had it. I was told by several people that it is incredibly hard to manufacture and they even believed that the other companies had to be fudging numbers in their QC department to get passing results. Not sure how true it is, but I HATED doing the particulate testing on that drug. Vacuum filtering up to a liter of that stuff through one membrane disk took forever, and then you had to count every particle bigger than 10 and 25 micrograms. It was misery.

I've heard nothing about this. I just loaded 20 Propofol into an ICU Pyxis. Perhaps it's coming.
We're currently out of Morphine 2, 4, and 10 mg/mL syringes, though. Also Fentanyl ampules.
It would be laughable if the recall were due to the MJ incident, though. I think that would go to show the direction our country is heading. In the words of Greenday: Idiot America.

the propofol recall was only from retail outlets... The only people affected by such a recall were those using it inappropriately.
We are out of morphine syringes too. It is a PITA because the nurses have been told a billion times to override for the 5mg vials but they keep calling and saying "uhhhh I can't get out the morphine so what do I do?"
oh man...my sympathies.
It did at mine, we were completely unable to get our normal volume of Propofol from McKesson....but then again, that happens sometimes with drugs that are not short at all!👎
We still have shelves of Propofol. But, we just pulled our last 14 vials of 5mg morphine to load up on the floor. BOOOOOO...when will this morphine shortage cease?!?!👎

Worse, they have to pay $350 million (they lost the case) because some unsupervised nurses reused syringes between patients when they drew multiple doses from the propofol.
Wow. I hope they can appeal that decision and win, those nurses are beyond fail.
At the UNM, some PA students were using the same lancets for multiple patients during a health fair with diabetes screening. Most of the people affected were American Indians who are ALREADY untrusting... 😡
We are officially out of 5mg vials of morphine. We are resorting to compounding from the 10mg/ml vials. They don't want to load them in pyxis because supposedly the nurses can't be trusted. What is everyone else doing?
