What is your top choice school. If you could go to any osteopathic school in the nation which would it be and why. If its location thats fine just list another attribute about the school. I'm kinda curious why someone would want to go to X school over Y and why someone else would rather attend Y over X any day etc. For me, my #1 choice would have to be NOVA altho as a whole I would love to go to PCOM for thier 3rd and fourth year rotations specifically but I know nothing about philli and I don't know how much I would like the city as I want to start a family(im engaged and I have 2 very active dogs that need lots of excercise) I know its doable and thats why I'm still applying. However Nova is a much better match for me as I am interested in Preventative Medicine, thier rotations are pretty good, I like the curriculum a lot and I will be close to my brother who lives in Boca, so thiers family support thier as well.

anyone else?

oh and Im a NJ resident and looking at 12 weeks of primary care your 3rd year is kind of a downer, and IMO UMDNJ SOM's match list don't really apeall to me, I do not want a HUGE residency, I just want IM so that I can be a GI doc, but still I want to keep my options open. altho the campus is BEAUTIFUL

My 1st choice is TOUROCOM-NY. A couple of reasons are that it's 2 train rides away from my house. Only 1 hour and it is 10 blocks away from where I volunteer and hope to get residency in. My dad works 10 blocks away and my cousins store is there too. The school is great because it's still new. Since it is a Jewish school it's flexible to my religious needs since I am Muslim. Having no classes after 12 would rock and a quick stop to my future job site wouldn't be too bad either. It's in the city so that's another plus. I like to be close to home since I do have a health condition and just incase anything happens at home I'll be close by. Really can't see myself go to far because I would worry too much about my family.

If not Touro then UMDNJ-Som just because it's in NJ. I live in jersey city,NJ so I guess that helps me out(instate student). Only reason UMDNJ is in my choice is because of the tution, they are really cheap compared to other schools out there.

Definitely Western. Why? For several reasons:

1) Location (I really want to stay in SoCal with family/friends)
2) Early emphasis on patient interviewing
3) Good rotation sites during third and fourth years
4) Friends that already go there
5) I've visited a couple of times and I think I'd be a good fit (I like the campus)
6) I personally know one of the professors
7) Western grads tend to match well into California residencies (I want to stay in Cali for residency as well)
8) The systems based curriculum is well suited to my learning abilities

that is another big plus for the school and the people that go thier are very friendly.

I am applying here as well but the move from NJ to cali is a bit intimidating. I also like the idea of a systems based curriculum. I think it would suit me very nicely.

Western, absolutely

I agree with Ibn, my number one is Western as well, although my reasons are mainly that it is located close (within 2 hours) to home and that I too have heard of the fact that Western grads match well into cali residencies.

This is about your #1 school. Your pipe dream. So don't be afraid to list places like Stanford, Hopkins, and GA-PCOM. Dreams can come true, you know.

Well, I guess if I had to mix allo schools into it, I'd choose USC or UCLA as my number 1, love LA.

LECOM-B...PBL!!!😀😀😀😀 Gosh I better not suck at it if I get in.🙄🙄

Within 30 minutes to 2 hours from home really is the ideal distance. Close enough to go home for a few home cooked meals, fridge raid, and free laundry, but far enough to justify not living at home.

Oxford University Medical School.
Gotta love a school that's been training doctors since the 1100's

I would be extremely happy with LECOM-B or UT Galveston. I'm all for PBL, and both schools are on the ocean. Either would be awesome. Honestly, I wouldn't go ivy-league if I could. I've found that smaller, less "impressive" schools have a much better atmosphere and teach just as well (this from a person who has attended 5 schools across 3 states).

Going into the process I had two tops that I would've loved to go to. IU and FSU. IU because I grew up in Indiana and always loved the school but they didn't have my major and FSU because it is cheap and close to home, as well as extremely friendly. So, I got into my top choice in that respect.

Pipe dream school? Hmmmmmm Stanford, UCSF, Pritzker or Mayo maybe? I would've loved Penn State to stay true to the blue and white, but oh well.

If were talking about allo then University of Miami Boca FTW, altho I did say osteopathic allo is a route as well. and boca has pbl and they study in the nerderies as they call them, I've visited a few times .

Plus, Boca is pretty nice.

Touro-NV for sure. Both personal reasons (family, sig. other, all my friends are here) and I really like the atmosphere there. I like the diverse student background, I guess the place just seems very welcoming.

Then again there's what you think you wanted (or want) and what you actually needed (or need). I got what I needed. 😀

We can all dream, but remember the original question...

Myself, and most others would probably love a school with a teaching hospital, residencies right there, but I'm somewhat of a non trad that is very excited about DO school so I'm aiming primarily for PNWU, and then VCOM and OUCOM if that doesn't work out.

VCOM is a GREAT school. Good luck!

KCOM! They seem to be extremely family friendly and I can come back to Utah to do my 3rd & 4th year rotations right by where my parents live. Solid reputation as an excellent school. Also my kids' pediatrician is a KCOM graduate and is one of the best/gnarliest doctors I've ever met.

PNWU is my first choice. it's 4 hrs away from home, new school, in state advantage, and close by 3rd and 4th year rotations.

CCOM. I'm from Indianapolis so its just close enough. Chicago (and Downer's Grove) are great, and CCOM has those great rotation sites and reputation. We'll see, hopefully if I apply early enough...

But all the schools I applied to would make me **** my pants if I got an acceptance from them. I just want to go!

My #1 osteopathic school is ATSU-SOMA. After having visited AZCOM, I just felt it was a better fit for me. I have also spent a great deal of time volunteering through one of their health centers and spoke with current students. I love how much they are involved in community health. And I truly believe in their methods for educating future doctors.

My #1 allopathic school is McMaster University. Thank god they only consider the verbal score of the mcat. That plus cheap tuition and a 3 year program.

In the end I would choose ATSU over McMaster.

Duke or UNC, both would be amazing. I love NC.

LECOM-B...PBL!!!😀😀😀😀 Gosh I better not suck at it if I get in.🙄🙄

This is my #1 too!

At first it was because of location since I live but 20 minutes away. But the more and more I've learned about LECOM-B, having actually had the opportunity to speak with some of the students, besides those on SDN, I'm totally stoked.

my #1 was UHawaii...but they quickly told me no.
Then I was hoping for ATSU-SOMA so i could still get out to the islands via their CHC training model. However, I soon lost faith in ATSU-SOMA as I wasn't guaranteed the Hawaii CHC.
I was gung-ho for my alma mater's new school, Florida International University, but they didn't make a decision on me in time and i fell in love with another school i was eyeing on the side.
The mystery mistress was Penn State and im happy to be going to such a sexy looking school.

My osteopathic top choice is AZCOM. It has a fantastic pass rate for the COMLEX, it's gorgeous and brand new, and when I visited there was this moment--you know, there was a flower-filled feild and classical music playing while the school and I ran towards one another with open arms. I just got a really good vibe from it.

If we wanna talk about allopathic--even though this is CLEARLY an osteopathic forum and you should all be ASHAMED as DOs are known for being the more attractive of the two--I'd go for UCSD or Stanford. I mean, I'm already a San Diego native and I'd love to keep surfing throughout the med student stint I have to serve.

Oh, and hey everyone. How're things? Been a while, no?

Kisses.

Yea, some of you guys suck at playing this game. 😉 It is GREAT that you love your school and was your top choice out of the ones you applied to, but come on. You can't honestly say if every school in this entire world offered you an acceptance that you would take the current one you have. This isn't a knock on any of the schools because we all have our reasons, but if you could end up UCSF, Harvard, Oxford, Johns Hopkins, Stanford, Heidelberg, Karolinska, etc. wouldn't you? I love my current school. I'm pretty infatuated with it. I sit there and say to myself, "Holy crap. I'm really here", but if price were no object and I could go anywhere it still probably wouldn't be here. 😉

Top three choices-Western, Rocky Vista, and PNWU. I would be equally happy at any of the three.

Let's face it, I will be happy at any school I get into because I will get to learn how to be a doctor and isn't that what it's all about?

Psh. No.

It's all about the groupies.

Top school regardless of DO/MD would have to be Western (unfortunately I'm on the alternate list). Second choice would have to be AZCOM (which is where I'm headed in less than 2 months unless Western gives me a call!).

Any of the 3 UMDNJ's

As for me, I would have to say NYCOM because of its reputation in the NYC area and the feedback I've gotten from students, alumni, etc. Also, being a new yorker, I love the rotation sites for students.

But I have heard a lot of great things about AZCOM, CCOM, PCOM, etc... so if I get interviews I'd love to check em out!

I've finally made my decision on an overall top for Western/UCLA/USC. The winner is USC. You get LA, good football, good medicine. Nothing better than that.

I am extremely happy that I am going to PCOM.

The area, the reputation, the opportunities. One of the oldest, more established D.O. schools.

Plus close to my family. WIN for me.

School of Hard Knocks

this is what im talking about
Any of the 3 UMDNJ's
your reasons why? I have heard the curriculum there is ANCIENT and you still go to class 9-5 everyday. I am a NJ resident so I would like to hear why?

School of Hard Knocks
That has to be a DO school

i grew up in NJ but my family moved to FL. my grandma is sick and is the only one left in NJ so my family wants me to move there to take care of her bc she refuses to move. im in the joint program with rutgers/umdnj for a master of science and im taking 4 classes that can transfer over to UMDNJ's med schools. id be happy to go to any school, even the caribbean bc i applied there too... but i just prefer NJ.

i went to RU then transferred to UF and got my bachelor's there. im not a true floridian but from my 2 years spent at UF and meeting ppl who applied and got into Nova for a PharmD, Optometry, and DO school... they all said that the campus was pretty but chose to go a better school they got into. As far as DO schools go, I do think Nova is the best in FL. good luck

Sorry to hear about your grandma. good luck in your masters I do however think its kind of odd that your family wants you to go to UMDNJ to take care of your grandma? hows that gonna be possible in Med School? I think you should go where your happiest man. UMDNJ is a good school tho. A quick tip about UMDNJ, they want to know you prior to you even applying. Get in thier face and get to know the people of the school ALL of my professors(as I have graduated Stockton) have said they accept applicants that they knew before interviewing etc. Get them to get to know you and youll have a much easier time. Pop in on some lectures visit a lot, speek to the admissions office, drop by, mention your a prospective student etc. good luck to you

yeah im pretty sure that they know im premed cuz im the only masters student taking med school classes. i had to get special permission and interviews just to register for those classes. in addition, im doing research at robert wood to finish my thesis. basically im getting my masters just so i can get in their face lol.

my fam is just backing me up when i say that my first choice is NJ. i just want to be there just in case something happens. this past feb, she slipped on the driveway and broke her hip and had no one there to be with her. id like to visit her whenever i can when im not busy with school.

Well good luck in the application process. Women can be stubborn lol(my mom is 62 and refuses to move in with any of my siblings) and its difficult considering that she won't move into your families home. Everything happens for a reason tho. Havinig her fall and have no one around isn't good. My gf is a Geriatric Socialworker and getting the older generation to do things is a difficult task. Whats even more difficult is getting thier families to realize when they actually need help. Its good that you and your family recognize the need for assistance. I wish you the best of luck.
