Does anybody know when do admissions start looking at the submitted applications? Like for schools with later deadlines (BU, SUNY..), do they start looking on/after the deadline, or do they start looking at the apps way earlier?

Depends on the school. Some schools with rolling admissions will look at them when they come in. Other schools with hard deadlines will look at apps once they the deadline has passed.

UPitt and UIC told me they were rolling, and Michigan won't look at apps until January. I don't know about other schools.

Do all schools send you confirmation emails when they've received your application from SOPHAS?

I would like to know if all schools e-mail you as well. So far I've received emails from UW, Umich and Yale telling me they've received my application from SOPHAS.

I know for a fact Yale is rolling..they've told me my app is already being looked at by the committee.

I've only received emails from UPitt and GW about my receiving my apps.
Eeep! Yale's already looking at apps?!

Their admissions told me they look at them as they come in. I wonder if Johns Hopkins is rolling? I also got a message saying my app was forwarded to the committee but I don't know if that means they're going to look at it right away.

Does anyone know if Berkeley or Harvard sends an email?

utph, did you apply for spring or fall?

How long should we wait to contact the school about our apps if they haven't emailed us? Michigan's website said a week, but no other schools specify. (SOPHAS mailed out my apps early last week and I haven't received any more confirming emails)

I was told that Texas waits until the deadline then looks at all the apps

I have a friend that works in admissions at UT-Houston. She told me they are currently looking at apps, but I don't know if it varies from dept to dept.

Music333, I applied for fall 2010.

Does anyone know if Emory is rolling/how soon they send out decisions?

Emory's my first choice (tied with UMich)...I'm really nervous about this one!

U Pitt sent an admissions letter to me today- Nov 17th. I submitted SOPHAS and then was notified that they got my app Oct 29th.

"We are pleased to inform you that you've been admitted to study in the MPH program in Epidemiology for fall 2010. Congratulations! An official letter of acceptance has been mailed to you."

Congrats! Wow, I wish all schools could be that fast.

Kubajf, you should start an acceptance thread. 👍

The answer to the original question is: not soon enough.

My applications are in, but the deadlines aren't until January 15, and my programs seem to fall into the category of reviewing apps after the deadline. However, I did have one of the profs I'm interested in working with email me and ask if I was still interested in the program. That's a good sign, right?

I am going to have a nervous breakdown. 😱

Congrats, kubajf!
I hope UPitt gets back to me that quick!

Emory takes approx. 3-6 weeks from the date the app was sent to your department to make a decision.

Nibor6000, did you apply to MPH programs? Were you in contact with that professor before?
I'm having a nervous breakdown as well!

So, I was right about UT working on a rolling basis.. I have been admitted!

I received the e-mail tonight from a prof in the Epi dept and was told that I was nominated for an "Outstanding New Student Scholarship". I don't know what it is exactly but I'm excited! The email says I will be given details with my official letter which will be mailed out next week.

For others who applied to UT...I thought you'd like to know that it also says in my email that the decision has been posted in my SOPHAS profile under school decisions for 5 days now. Oops! I checked it and my status for UT says admitted on 11/13. I always assumed schools just contact you, but maybe it depends on the school.
So I hope that information helps those UT applicants in the near future. 🙂

Me too! And same scholarship! In the email, they say it's a "modest amount". I went to the UT website and I think it says up to $1000 per semester, therefore $3000 total. I'm still really excited since this is my first school admit. I didn't seriously think I would hear back from schools until March. 🙂

Music333 - I'm applying to nutrition PhD programs and gerontology PhD programs. This forum is the best I can find to match my interests. I currently work in public health.

utph, an eponymous admission! That's dope. Congrats!

i just confirmation that emory and dartmouth are reviewing my app right now and i should know in about 3-6 weeks (emory) and 2-4 (dartmouth). BU is probably going to look at mine soon too once my GRE score gets there. yale and SDSU are both prepping my application for send off as well.

Ughh, I am still waiting on 2 rec letters. Reading this thread has made me even more impatient, haha.

Emily, I can relate. I had to bug my letter writers for over a week to get them all in. Just got my last one on Tuesday... hang in there!!! 🙂

I had a letter writer issue too. I only have 1 December deadline so I asked them to have that one done by November 14th and the rest by December 1st. Turned out my other writer completed his faster than I expected (2 days) and everything else is done with my app's (all transcripts, GRE scores, app's etc.) Checked with the December deadline school and saw that he still had not submitted, even after my reminder e-mail, causing me to get worried and wonder if I needed a backup. Got in touch with him yesterday to find out that he sent the two non-SOPHAS recs out Saturday and is doing the SOPHAS rec Monday. 9 times out of 10 they are not going to tell you they will write one if they really don't have time or intend to. You'll be fine Emily 🙂

Yeah, none of my deadlines are until at least January 4 or later, so I asked them if they could finish the letters before December 1 (giving a month or so for SOPHAS processing, if necessary). But reading all of these I am getting SO impatient!

Luckily for all of us "late" ( 🙂 ) applicants, the verification process seems to be moving along pretty quickly.

For those of us that submit and get apps mailed before our last LOR is posted to SOPHAS, any word on how our they're handled? Are they mailed to schools separately or should we be contacting the schools that already received our mailed apps to let them know to download the new LORs?

Eeeek, I know! The people on this board are making feel like such a slacker! :eyebrow:

Does anyone have info on how long U Washington, Yale, and Harvard take to get back to applicants?

edit: oops, I meant for decisions. Good call utph.

For their decision or to let you know they received your application?

I've received emails from UW and Yale to tell me my app is complete (but only Yale said it was being sent for review).

I received emails from Yale, Emory and UF, saying they've received my app. Nothing from UCLA, Berkeley, Harvard.

Does this mean that all of the early applicants are getting in and filling the spots, so that those of us who have to wait until the deadline because of LORs or GRE's, won't have as good of a chance of getting in? BU is my #1 school, and i'm not taking my GREs until 12/23. Is this cutting it too close (there deadline is 2/10)? I can't make it any earlier due to my final finals, and then I need a good solid two weeks to study for just that. But i'm extremely worried now!!

i got a notice from yale and UW saying my app was complete. yale said they were reviewing my app once they got my GRE scores. UW doesn't start reviewing till later.

Well, technically, yes and no.

Early applicants are filling spots, but not all early applicants are getting in automatically.

Unless the schools get a plethora of awesome apps before the deadline, I don't imagine there being no spots left when deadline rolls around.

Also some schools don't even look at apps until the deadline (but nothing is certain with this rule, just look at U.Tex)

Has anyone received email confirmations from UMich lately?
When I called them 2 weeks ago, they said they were behind and it'll be sent the following week. When I called them last week, they said they were still behind and it'll be sent this week. But I still haven't received anything yet.

Music333, I got a confirmation email from Michigan about a week after sophas mailed off my app, but it said my gre scores were missing. So I called them and they verified for me over the phone that my application and GRE scores were received. Whomever I spoke with was really nice. They said that because they don't begin to look at apps until Jan that they move a little slow in putting things into the system but not to worry.

UNC anyone?
I heard something about a PID that *seems* to be different then your login info used to create the app. I submitted the app with fee last week(minus 1 rec). The final rec was posted this week and I am wondering if anyone has received anything from them saying app was complete...

I received an email from Harvard yesterday confirming that they received my app from SOPHAS. They said they wouldn't provide any info on if it's complete or not...
Also in the email:
"The faculty review process continues into early February, and you will be notified of the admissions decision by late February/early March."

Hope that helps!

thanks utph; got the same email yesterday.

good luck!

According to their website my application has been complete for about a month but I haven't heard anything. I'm abroad so I can't really give them a call...let me know if you hear anything!

Okay, I just got an email from UIC saying that they have received my app and that it is under review. But I received an acceptance letter over a week ago! 😕

Haha! Accept the applicant, THEN review the application. That's definitely another way to do it... 🙂 I think more schools should adopt this way.

Eeeek! It's probably just a glitch in the matrix. Automated emails sending themselves and whatnot. (Congrats on your acceptance by the way!)

I got an email from BU saying that they were were starting to look at my application but haven't heard anything since. I am applying to the GH track. Has anyone heard anything from BU yet?

You were likely 'recommended' by the department to which you applied. The same thing happened to me. The departement will send a notice to you and to the school at about the same time. THEN the school will decide if they want to take you. So, you will be getting a letter of acceptance soon.

The reason why they send u that email is because their inhouse database was just recently updated. The department looked at your application through SOPHAS.

If you're applying to MPH there's a 99% chance you're in. You should be notified in a few weeks. If MS or PHD... you have a high chance of getting in and will be notified early in 2010.

^Yeah, I called a few days ago and they told me the same thing. Apparently my supplemental fee was only processed last week and the "acceptance letter" from the biostats/epi department was mailed out a week before that.

BU said that they take up to 8 weeks to make decisions. And if they've received a lot of spring apps, they definitely might take the whole 7-8 weeks for us fall applicants.

i heard the same from BU. GWU and emory both told me that there might be more delays because of the incoming holiday period. i wouldn't expect much from them until january 2010 at the earliest if you submitted in November...

Yeah I applied to BU in early/mid October...They said it would be a few weeks. I don't think anyone on this board had heard from BU but I just wanted to check.

I hope Emory can't see how many times per day I check OPUS...

I'm the same way with UNC 🙂

Question: Did it take a long time for the Graduate school to process your transcripts? The application system is showing that the department has received them, but not the graduate school. 😕
