I have a 3.68 GPA, great EC, and I'm writing my MCAT August 22.
A lot of US med schools have rolling admission so I'm applying there next year if I don't get into a Canadian school this year.
I want to apply to Canadian med this year because they don't have rolling admission (I believe) so having my MCAT late (getting the results ~ a month later in September) wouldn't hurt me like it would in the states.
Is this true?

I know OMSAS opens up mid July but on average when do Canadian med schools start reviewing apps to give interviews or rejections (since it's not rolling it has to be all at once right)?

Also, do DO schools in the US have rolling admission?

Thank you.

First of all, are you Canadian and if so what province are you from? Some Canadian schools take like 1 or 2 international students per year, but most are closed off to internationals (and even other Canadians).

For OMSAS at least you can write the latest possible MCAT date and it will be looked at as part of your app. The only downside is you might apply and find out you bombed and therefore wasted your money applying.

Most Canadian schools send out interview invites around late Jan/early feb. Each school sends all of its invites at once. The maritime schools may send their invites out a little earlier (not sure about them). For ontario schools all acceptances come out on May 15 (as well as waitlists and rejections).

Admissions in both DO and MD schools is rolling, although how early a school sends out secondaries is a little school dependent.

Hope this helps,

that depends on whos reading it but the minimum for consideration in Ontario is an 8 in every section (although most people say its actually a 9) and a 30 overall.

I know people with 3.7 and mid 30s who didnt get interviews

Lets go through the list of Ontario schools:

For Queens (this is a little bit of speculation, but is the general trend for invites):

MCAT: 30 overall, VR 10, BS 10, PS 9. (May change without writing section).
GPA 3.70 overall or 3.75 in last two years (if you have a masters may be more flexible).

Western:

MCAT: 30 overall, VR 11, BS 10, PS 9 (again, up in the air with WS gone, could change).
GPA 3.70 in two years of study.

Toronto:

MCAT 9 in each section (will flag application if 7/8 in one section)
GPA 3.60, but in recent years I have not seen anybody without extensive pubs and a grad degree get an interview without 3.8.

Ottawa:

No MCAT
GPA 3.85 wGPA (last year is weighed x3, second last year x2, third last year x1).

NOSM:

no mcat
GPA is good, but you need a context score (aboriginal status, francophone status, from north, from rural area, and some other stuff). Apparently very very very few people have been invited without at least one context checked off.

MCMaster

MCAT: Verbal reasoning only. Minimum of 6, but realistically with your gpa you need at least a 10 to have a shot at an interview. If you scored a 12 I think you would have a good shot ( and an okay shot with an 11, very good with 13, you'd have to be an idiot not to get an II with a 15). I'll be applying with an 11 in vr, a completed MA, and a 3.69 overall this year and I do not think I'll get an interview unless I rock CASPER.

Anyway, you should apply to the U.S. both MD and DO. The U.S. really is the land of opportunity in regard to medical schools. Canada's admissions policies (especially for Ontarians from certain regions) are really, really aggravating. Basically if you were born in the wrong place in Ontario you have to be a premed rockstar to get in (sorry, got rejected again this year and I am a little peeved about it).

Hope this helps.

p.s. look into full course load requirements. I know for Ottawa and Western you definitely need a full course load for your gpa to count (5 courses per semester).

Wow thank you so much this list was great.
When you say GPA 3.70 in two years of study for Western do you mean best two or most recent two years?
It definitely sucks being from Niagara Falls (was born in France but who cares). I'm applying to Canadian and only around 5 DO and 5 MD (not applying to Carib at all) so I don't waste money then next year I will apply to a bunch of MD and DO and Canadian again.
I've heard of a 3.58 GPA and 30 MCAT with great EC getting accepted to both Queen's and McMaster so never say never.

3.58 and 10 vr to Mac is certainly possible, just not likely. For Queens you would need a graduate degree, but it may have been possible a few years ago.

For Western I think (you should double check) they do not have to be consecutive. For Queens they do.
