I also will be taking 2 gap years, so it seems like by the time I apply and hopefully get in, it'll add two more years on top of when people normally become doctors.

I'm pretty sure @goft20 meant that sarcastically.

It really depends on the person. I know doctors who had kids prior to starting med school, and I know those who had kids during med school. I've know a few who had kids during internship/residency, and some who waited to have kids until after they finished residency.

It's totally up to the individual and what he/she thinks that they and their support system can handle.

I think I'll need to wait until after residency, but that means I'll be 32. If I rush to apply, I might get lucky and I'll start trying at 30.

Well, in that case better have a baby now...I can help if you need it.

Ugh, gotta get straight As next year and apply right away. More time to have babies.
Now I am starting to think that you want babies more than you want to be a doctor. Don't you remember the contract you signed and oath you took when deciding to be pre med? SACRIFICE EVERYTHING including your cute babies:

No, I want to be a doctor more than I want kids now. But, I don't want to be old like my parents were when they had me.

Never, ain't got time for that sort of work

Ok, how about you get a md/phd and go into genetic engineering. Research and develop a way to make yourself younger while at the same time have six to eight kids. Spend lots of late nights to develop your gene therapy. Eventually, you will find out that this is not possible so you enroll in Hogwarts the school of wizardry and witchcraft. After 7 years, you graduate from said school and return home. Your kids are probably 14-15 years old now. You use your magic stuff to turn them back into babies and make your self younger.

Voila, problem solved. Your welcome.

Been here a while, this is a throwaway account.

Just to offer a counter scenario, my mom had me while getting her ECFMG certification, ended up matching Peds at Sinai. She went to a 6 year MD program abroad. So its def possible to have kids at some point in time.

I was planning in 4th year or so - but my doc says I probably can't have kids. No use stressing about that anymore.

I think I'll have a baby then too. And never say never, there are other ways.

Whenever they want to. Look, there's no really good time to have a child, except maybe when you reach professor Emeritus. Thus, you might as well have them when you want to.

Just plan for college...they grow up FAST!!

When we decide not to use protection.

Many, many people to me "It's never the right time to have to kids. If you wait until the right time, you'll never have kids. Don't postpone the rest of your life while you're training"

Lol, when they're ancient!

Sorry guys, I couldn't resist. Actually, I had the same question. I was hoping it might be possible to take one year off between medical school and residency to help the wife with the infant, and then go to residency when the kid is one year old. Can that work?

I think usually AFTER they get pregnant.

Usually they're a consequence of unprotected sex.
Kinda like STD's, except they usually outlive you.
