I am a 3rd year carib med student. I now have to arrange/schedule my rotations for next year. I have few weeks i can take off to go for interviews. When do interviews occur-interested in internal medicine and neurology- not sure which way to go yet.

Residency interview "season" is from October through mid February. The majority of interviews will be November - January, with most programs not interviewing the week between Christmas and New Years.

You need to be on some "softball" 4th year rotations during which time you can take time off for interviews, not a required rotation in which you aren't allowed to miss any time.

I interviewed for neurology. My first one was on Oct 22 (I've heard some programs started on Oct 15) and my last one is on Feb 4. Around the holidays, I had one the week of Tgiving and one the week of Xmas, but none b/w Xmas and New Years.

was planning on avoiding doing my sub I during oct-jan. also planning on taking a week off in nov and dec...would that work???
cuz our hospital coordinator said that i should not try and take more than 2-3 days off during a 4 week rotation.....since i have few weeks to play with...would i be in my best interest to take a week off in nov and dec...or one in october as well..

Guju I think you're trying to overplan this.

Taking a week off is fine but if you have interviews that fall outside of that week (extremely likely if a competitive candidate), what are you going to do? You cannot estimate when and where you will get interviews, so to try and preplan by taking a week off randomly (which it would be at this point), doesn't make much sense to me.

And yes the coordinator is correct that you should try and avoid taking too many days off during rotations, but ya know what? Everyone does it as its pretty much unavoidable.

Highly recommend taking a full month off (or doing a "research" elective) in either December or January if possible. This should give you enough flexibility to schedule most of your interviews. Then use random "days off" in the other months for the rest.

As the others have said, Nov-Jan is the prime time, but there will be the occasional few in late October or early Feb.

Carib students can not do a research elective (and have it count towards graduation and licensure). All electives must be clinical.

Then find a clinical elective with a reputation for being very forgiving of multiple absences to interview.

thanks for the advice...i was just a bit freaked out about trying to make a schedule for next year. trying to fit study time for CK and what not.

Do not take time off for that.... schedule a lighter elective and study during it.... take the exam....... go back to a heavy elective.
