When do most do their research?

I got the impression most people are doing their work over summers, but 3rd year has come up as an option. MSIII seems busy, but maybe I'm overestimating the time requirement.

And are most tech/RA positions paid/competitive?

Probably the most popular time to do research is over the summer after the first year. You don't generally have "summerS", as you will be studying for and taking Step 1 in the following summer. Others do research in their "spare" time during first and second year.
While you probably couldn't find time to do much research during third year rotations, it is not unheard of for folks going into certain specialties to take off a year to do research after their second year -- that is probably what you are hearing about.

yup...NIH offers a mid-medical/dental school training awards for a full year in research. If you get into a lab that publishes a lot, it seems like a good way to get involved and get a publication 🙂. But, if you are seriously considering research, I agree with Law2doc, and if you do a year off, you can do a research elective to finish up anything on that project. It's hard to get really involved in one summer, although you will probably get to present a paper....
