My question is the title of this thread. How many weeks in December do they not interview? What about Thanksgiving Break?

I need to plan a vacation in December.

I need to plan a vacation in December.

Most places stop a day or 2 before Xmas and start up again a day or so after NY. My latest Dec interview was 12/22 and the earliest Jan one was 1/3. Looking at the calendar I would bet 12/21 would be the last day this year and the first in Jan will be the 2nd or 3rd. As for Txgiving, I had an interview the day before and the Monday after.

The program I just received an interview invite from gave me the option of interviewing any Tuesday or Thursday between November and February. The only exclusions they gave me were the actual holidays (i.e. Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's).

Interviews between Christmas and New Year's will be sparse but there will be some. As others have noted, they will usually stop a few days before any major holidays (make sure to include Jewish holidays as well) and restart a couple of days after. Thanksgiving will probably have no interviews the day before or the day after.

any thoughts about whether interviewing very close to the holidays poses a risk of having few faculty or residents there? meeting other residents is very important, i think we'd all agree, so i'd hate to show up jan 3 and find half the residents still on vacation.

I dunno how it works at other programs, but we weren't allowed to take vacation during December/January (one because we got 4 days off aruond Christmas or New Years and two because it would interfere with our ITE review).

BUMP. I'd be interested in hearing other people's thoughts on this. I already have an interview scheduled around the thanksgiving holiday (bought my plane ticket and everything), so I guess I'm stuck even if it hurts my chances.

In my experience everyone will still be around for interviews, even close to the holidays. For us residents, those holidays are work days....
