I know that most residency programs begin on July 1st. However, I know that many require you do a lot of training and paperwork before the first day.

Generally speaking, when do you normally have to "report"?

I'm trying to plan a vacation. Thanks for your help.

It differs with each program, so it depends on where you match. However, you can probably guesstimate that your orientation will start no earlier than 2-3wks before July1. However, if you have to plan your vacation a little later, most programs are pretty flexible about it, if you miss a few days of orientation.

Figure that you're probably going to busy the entire 2nd half of June. There's a huge variation though. Some programs put you on service early, others have major trips/campouts for their intern class, and some it's nothing but taking PALS, listening to some boring speakers, and signing your name over and over and over. If you can, just take the vacation in May and avoid any hassles.

Agree. Go enjoy yourself during May and count on June being taken up by moving and orientation. But really, really enjoy May. July 1 is a bit of a shock!

And some programs have their new interns start doing clinical work the last week of June and overlap with the outgoing upper-level residents, so it is possible that you may start "work" around June 24, with orientation to the department and hospital coming before then. A few med schools have graduation in early June, which puts a squeeze on their graduates in terms of getting moved and settled prior to the beginning of orientation. Unless the program at which you match tells you otherwise, I wouldn't make unrefundable plans for vacation after the first week or so of June (plane tickets, cruises, etc.).

Yes, this. You won't know your schedule until you know where you're going. If you're making travel plans I would plan on enjoying May, moving in the beginning of June, and then beginning orientation mid-June. It's not going to "look bad" to miss the first day or so of orientation, but it can be a big PITA if you're having to find your own time (and possibly, your own money) to take PALS, BLS, NRP, and all that other fun stuff. In my mind, it's not worth the headache and you should just schedule a vacation for another time.

The "report date" is highly variable.

I didn't have to report to orientation until June 23rd (or thereabouts) whereas I had friends that had to report by June 16th (or thereabouts). Anywhere in between those dates is probably reasonable b/c orientation generally takes about one week.
