Where does one learn to do abortions? Does one learn in medical school? How are they perfomed?

njbmd said:Hi there,
A medical student does not learn to perform abortions. D & C or D & E are generally taught during OB-Gyn residency along with other techniques. You may learn or observe these procedures but you will not be "taught" them per se as a medical student.

However, students at my school who are interested in shadowing abortion providers can do so through a shadowing program set up by our Medical Students For Choice chapter. You may want to check out what your school groups have to offer.
Also, you are correct in that physicians other than ob/gyns can perform abortions. I don't know the details of the training required, but I have heard of family med and pediatricians trained in this. Again, you should check out MSFC or a similar group to find out more.

geekOCD said:I don't think it's such a crazy question, after all, a large reason there are groups at med schools that have shadowing programs is b/c some med students a few years ago said "hey, wait a sec, who does abortions? and where/when do they get trained??" b/c it was a totally ignored/not spoken about topic not so long ago. That said, don't know what the OP's intentions are =) But the question itself isn't necessarily so suspicious.

We shouldn't make folks here feel even more uncomfy about asking questions that society already considers "taboo" - especially if said folks will be expected to take care of said population, by virtue of chosen profession.

lobster M.D. said:yea but you have to learn first which direction to scramble, clockwise or counterclockwise

Not trying to start any kinda of war of the words here but you just came off a bit too self rightous. Thats all.Panda Bear said:Why so sensitive on the subject? I just pointed out that even the worst brutality in the world, if practiced often enough and cloaked in legality, can seem like just another day at the office.
