When does West. U and Florida send out their interview notifications?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If you do a 'search the forum', choose advanced search and go back to this past year for 'interviews' you can pretty much find out dates all schools notified last time around. I didn't look up Fl. & have no personal experience, but I do know Western. Last year, Western interviewed the week of 1/29 thru 2/5. They telephoned (Karen Lopez) everyone who was granted an interview & followed it up w/ an instructional email. They began making phone calls 1/10 and called thru 1/26. I believe some got rejection letters in the mail the same time that others got phone calls for their interviews. Somebody wrote on the forum last yr that Western interviewed 300 for 100 seats. If the time frame is the same this yr., there is another month to wait for things to start happening w/ Western.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember the UF interview notifications coming out in mid-Feb, interviews in March, and decisions in very early April.

Anyone else heard anything yet? I guess there were a couple of interview invites mentioned in the interview thread before Christmas, but afterwards?

They will be back in the office next week and will begin emailing interview invites then. I'm hoping that I will be one of them!

Thanks for the update, although now that I know this I am even more nervous!! 🙂

Western is back in their offices Jan. 7th

Will they only be emailing interview invites or rejections as well?

Anybody heard anything from Western yet? I realize it's only Tuesday but ..... can't wait!!

Now, now, it's only Tuesday...and they just got in the office (it's 8 am there!)

Ok, end of rational thinking....THEY'RE IN THE OFFICE NOW!!! 😱

Yeah, but is today the day they let us know...? You're freaking me out!
:scared:

I'm starting to get really depressed. I'm pretty sure one of my choices is out (Michigan) since they sent me the results of my dean's review stating that they want me to retake seven classes!! This is in light of the fact that some of my coursework is more than 8 years old. Included in that seven is Biology I and II (are they serious??? I have a B.S. in Biology, have worked in the field since my graduation and they want me to retake the most basic of classes?) 😕

Anyway, sorry about the vent but I'm just bummed. There's no way I could retake all those classes unless I quit work and go to school full time (not an option).

So - my question now is, when does Western U and Florida send out their interview notifications? I'm just curious since those are my other two options. I'm in-state for Florida. I need something to look forward to. 😉

Thanks!

Welcome to the club, Meadow! Most of my classes are outta date too. I feel your pain! 😉 It's pretty difficult to stay motivated when you're taking microbio for the 2nd time (and know it still may not get you in!:meanie:). Hang in there, kiddo! Just look at all the second-timers on this forum...if they can do it, we can do it!:luck:

I am dying to know and checking my email every 6 minutes....

Also, I need to take several classes to satisfy Western's pre-req's. If I don't get an interview I won't be taking those classes- which start next week..... eek:scared:

You too, huh?

Well Western would like me to take Biochem and Micro over (because of the time limit) however they reviewed my file in November and gave me permission to take those two classes over the summer, since I am already taking three classes this spring and work full time. I guess that's good news that they gave me permission; they must like something about me. I like it because if I don't get in I don't have to bother (although I will still take them next fall for when I re-apply).

Grrrrrr no e-mail today. 🙁 Let's keep each other updated please!!!!!

Hmmm...I wonder if they'll let me do that too?

Western told me we will hear by the end of the month about interviews..... no interview, no acceptance.

I haven't heard anything yet. I'm hoping soon!!

Just received an email interview invite! The email linked to a page where I was prompted to schedule an interview during the weeks of 2/4 and 2/11.

Anyone know which airport is the best to fly into?

Fly into Ontario. That is by far the best. You REALLY do not want to fly into LAX if you are not experienced with LA traffic, trust me on that!

Congrats! I really enjoyed my time there.

:luck:

I got my invite 1/8 by email from Karen Lopez. I am really excited. I have never been to CA and I think I might spend an extra couple of days out there, any suggestions on where to go that's not too far from Pomona?

What kind of things do you like doing?

Anything horse related🙂, but I do enjoy just poking around different places and seeing new things. I like both city and rural places. Is there even anything rural nearby? I have never been to CA so I figured it would be nice to see a few different things while I am there. Maybe visit the San Diego Zoo? Thanks!

😳 I am probably one of the most urban kids you could meet. Grew up in downtown LA area. I don't know very much about horse things..sorry. The LA zoo is also nice (def not as good as the SD one.) You are looking at about a 2-3 hour drive in GOOD traffic to get to SD. If you go there there is also the wild animal park (I like it better than the zoo) and Sea World.

If you like amusement parks, Knotts Berry Farm is only about 20 minute or so drive (again in good traffic) and is really fun IF you like thrill rides. 6 Flags Magic Mountain is also fun but is about 1 hour drive. Then there is also Disneyland (boring to me and way too many kids for me) and Disneys California adventure (I have not been there).

You can go to the beach in about a 40 minute drive southwest. Santa Monica and Long Beach have nice piers (Long Beach has the Long Beach aquarium which is pretty cool).

I do not know if you have seen this part of Western's website but it may help:

Thanks Chris! That is all very helpful. I will check out that link- I hadn't come across that yet. It should be a good trip!

Thanks again!🙂

Oh you poor, poor excited people. I was you last year. Now I am a completely exhausted first-year Western student (I think I've aged a few years in the process). Western's program is more difficult, more enriching, and more encompassing than any program in the country, IMHO. I took classes at a standard lecture-based veterinary school, and that school was a cake-walk compared to Western. If you choose Western, be prepared to teach yourself the material. Be prepared to be thrown into client interviews and physical exams during your first week of classes (at any one of the three clinics you visit monthly). Be prepared to spend weekends in the anatomy lab. Be prepared to teach yourself histology (an art form unto itself). Be prepared to work harder than you've ever worked in your life. Be prepared to deal with all kinds of personalities, as you'll be in a small room with 6 strangers daily with whom you may not get along. Be prepared to read five texts on one organ just to get the full picture (and be prepared to learn more than you've ever learned in your life and actually retain it). Be prepared to explain the material you've learned down to the molecular level, as the professors will be quizzing you daily (even when you're frustrated and the last thing you want to do is "PBL" a question three days before the exam). Be prepared for 18-week semesters (including two weeks of exams--some are 3 in a day).

Just be prepared.

Someone get me some caffeine!!

😳

You'll get used to it after a while trust me. You will realize how much you know when you hit clinics. It is worth it. It really is (and I was in your same place when I was a first year). Second year is gonna be really tough (virtually none of the cases actually are completely closed by the end of the week) and it WILL SUCK BIG TIME and you will be hating PBL (if not already). When all is said and done and you hit clinics, you will be glad you went through it. Feel free to PM me for support/tips sometime. Now go drink your coffee, you've got lots of things to learn still:meanie:

I just mine at 5:55 PM last night for Western U. Whee! Scheduled my interview for February 7. I'm super excited because my boyfriend lives in LA and I'll get to visit him 😀 One of the (many) reasons I applied there is because it'd get me within an hour of him, as opposed to where I live now, which is about 1500 miles away from him.

Thanks, Chris, you're so sweet!! My only problem is I don't drink coffee! But I've been IVing tea 🙂

Any of you interviewing, if you have any questions while on campus, come see me. I'm Alice in PBL room 114. Or in anatomy lab. Or on rotation. Or on the moon. Say hi 🙂

BTW, they're finishing up the new vet building, but I don't think it's walk-throughable yet.

Then start drinking black tea😀

Yay! I got my interview invite in my email last night! I work with a woman who interviewed at Western for the DVM program, so she's giving me pointers--like: bring a snack or two & bring some walking shoes (for after the interview)!
I guess I'd better start boning up for the interview...😀
For you Western students lurking on here...😉...anything you think I should ask my interviewers??

Well they are gonna hammer you with behavioral type questions, you can turn around and ask them some. For example:

-Tell me one thing you love about working here and one thing you feel can be improved.😛

Noted!😀

I took some veterinary classes in the midwest while studying at Purdue, and one of the vets for whom I worked (a Purdue graduate), was of the "good ole boy" mindframe--he told me that he wouldn't want anyone working on his animal who hadn't done terminal surgeries. I posed the situation to my interviewers, and then asked how difficult it was going to be for me coming through a program that did not use terminal surgeries to teach students (Western has a strong "reverence for life" policy, one of the reasons I chose it), and they said I would probably face some consternation; however, they also brought up the immense number of job openings for vets in CA, which would negate the issue. We also get clinical experience that no other school in the country offers until the students are in their third years. So raspberry on that old vet.

I got the rejection from Western today. I appreciate it because it came before I started any of the 5 classes they wanted me to take. I'm really disappointed though- I really would have done well in their curriculum and I really enjoyed my visit to Western for their vet student orientation a few months ago 🙁

Ross...here I come!

I'm sorry to hear that Founder. On the bright side if you have any interest in marine animal medicine, you'll be in the right place. A prof/vet who teaches at SGU runs Marvet in Florida and the British West Indies every year. I also hear Ross makes their curriculum mighty difficult. If you do well, I've heard some US schools may take transfers (at least Purdue took one), but you might just love it. 🙂

So I looked at the status page and the interview notifications go out the third week of February and the interviews are March 8 and March 22. ahhhhhhhhh so nervous!

Received my rejection letter from Western today. 🙁 I have to say I'm a little surprised; I thought this was the school I had the best chances for an interview. I seemed to fit their demographic perfectly. Oh well.

Florida is my only hope now. I can't believe I have to wait a month for interview notifications!!!

I thought my chances for interviews at Western were also high. I'm the model of diversity, and really thrived during the get to know you pre-vet day there a few months ago. There loss!!!! I'll make it at Ross. And who knows, hopefully I will be able to transfer back to a US school

Western also bases its selection process on racial, sexual and age demographics--most people applying are 24-26yo white females, thus that is the range of most competition. Our class is very diverse, with a large international population (although we only have one African-American student, which I think is sad). All the more reason to have something odd/different to make your application stand out. They believe the diversity aids in the group learning process.

It seems like a lot of Western Vet students are from California. Does geographical diversity matter at all? I know they take a certain percent of foreign students, but does where they live in the states matter?

I got my Western rejection in the mail sometime in the last few days (was out of town this weekend). Not much good news can come in the mail at this point for me- its either rejections or bills. Neither of which I want anything to do with! 😛 But hey its not all bad, I still got a few applications out, and a trip to Vegas this weekend...

I rec'd an email from Florida today saying that "letters regarding the status of your application will be sent out the second week of February"

Good luck everyone:luck:
