actually..this is a good question....
i remember i had this lab instructor...we all called her by 1st name...then later we were all like "**** she's a "doctor" [phd]!*

Some PharmDs get upset if you don't refer to them as "doctor", but they seem to be a minority. I only use the moniker when making restaurant reservations. After all, there are long-practicing Rphs, who attained their degree before the PharmD became the terminal degree. They have much more knowledge than newbie PharmDs, and they don't go by "doctor".

lol this reminds when i was a sophmore or junior in college..i forget....the teacher warned some freshmans in bio class to refer to teachers as "Dr"
b/c too often freshmans would forget they are in college and say Mrs/Mr ....i thought that was funny how she was expressing how serious it is and how annoyed and pissed professors get. best respect!

The pharmacist I worked for (retail) said he would never go by 'doctor' unless he worked in a hospital setting, where anyone who does not have the title 'doctor' doesn't get heard by the patient or generally does not get much respect.
Think what you will, but I thought that was an interesting take on the matter.

I officially move to pin one of the previous threads to the top of the forum. It literally comes up every two months....like clockwork.
You know what will happen:
1) Someone asks question
2) Someone says "yes, in academic circles"
3) Someone says "yes, on your mail"
4) Someone says "yes, I demand it, I spent several years in school"
5) Medical/Dental student/practitioner comes by and whines about how either a PharmD isn't on the same level as an MD/DDS (which is ridiculous) or that being called "Doctor" in a hospital will lead to confusion and somehow compromise patient care (though I have no idea how...)
6) Screaming, flaming, death threats
7) I get blamed for the flame war and wind up getting an infraction even though I didn't actually post in the thread.
8) Thread closed by mods
9) Two months pass
10) Repeat step 1
Over...and over...and over...forever...and ever.
You know what will happen:

At least, the nurses and the physicians won't call you doctor. I don't want to be called doctor because the word is still tied to the word "physician" who can diagnose and prescribe medication. The title can be confusing in a hospital setting unless they consistently use the word "physician" for MDs. How about "PharmD. Smith" instead of "Dr. Smith"? "pharmacist smith" would be the best in my opinion.

StudentDoctora-The thread was new to me, who is new to SDN, and I appreciated a fresh perspective. Sorry if you feel like the freshman in a hallway full of seniors, I'm sure your professional colleagues didn't mean to make you feel tiny so they feel tall, cause there's always someone cooler than you (Ben Folds).
Don't worry. It's just that after a while, you just give up answering a question that's been asked thousands of times. I dug around and found three threads on your question.

I think someone who earns a doctorate in a specific field has earned the right to be called doctor. It's silly to think that physicians should be the only ones addressed as doctor. I've had professors who were doctors in other fields, such as history and English, who did not want to be called doctor because they thought the title should only be reserved for physicians. How sad.
As for me, I definitely wouldn't mind being addressed as doctor on the job 😎, but I would feel odd being addressed as doctor outside of the work setting. I would actually prefer to be called by my first name both on and off the job. 👍 However, if someone told me that I wasn't entitled to be addressed as doctor I would tell them to shove it. 👎
