Hello all,

I know that conventional wisdom is that you do not retake B's and for C's the workaround is to take additional upper level coursework to demonstrate academic ability. Problem is, I've pretty much taken all the upper level courses (cell bio, mo bio, biochem, genetics, etc.) and gotten a mixed bag of C's and B's so pretty much anything I take at UC Berkeley Extension is a retake. These classes were also like 10 years ago so for purposes of learning the material for MCAT, I'm retaking them anyway.

My question is, should I plan to take additional upper level coursework that's new to my transcript (random classes like molecular endocrinology or immunology) on top of all the repeats I have planned? Or will 2 years straight of the standard prereqs + standard upper divs (cell bio, mo bio, biochem, genetics, a&p) be enough to demonstrate my academic ability assuming good grades?

Thanks!

If you can do well in those classes there's no harm in taking novel upper divs. Honestly immunology will be super helpful, so will neuroanatomy and others. The key is doing well in these classes. If I were you, I'd retake the classes with C's because the A would average the C to a B, where as with the B's won't really get a bump in GPA as much. You also need to think about the MCAT and the best way to study for that, so if you need to retake those classes in order to do well on the exam then they're beneficial.
