When is it safe to assume that we're done receiving interviews?

When should we assume that schools are finished sending out interview invitations? It's getting pretty late in the cycle now and I only have a couple of rejections, yet I'm still "under review" at a majority of schools that I have applied to.

Is there a set date in which schools officially stop inviting students to interview, or is there a slow trickle at some point that eventually dries up?

At this point, I would say that if you haven't received an interview invite you're pretty much done. They'll send a reject letter at the end of the season or just not contact you at all. You can, however, call to ask your status at each school if you haven't done that. At some schools, they do make note of your interest and you have nothing to lose, which might prompt an applicant to call more than once...

In any case, you need to start figuring out a plan for next year if you don't have one. If you're still interested in medicine, you may wish to start researching post-bacc programs or SMPs (or maybe even MPH programs or whatever else you might want to do). As far as I know, these programs finish their application season in June and still accept people right up to the deadline. If you're going to do those, get your application together and out ASAP. . Don't be discouraged. Many accepted students are reapplicants. I've heard that the number is as high as 50%. There are also students who have applied 4 times before getting in.

As far as selecting programs goes, I know that the AAMC website has an incomplete but still helpful list somewhere. Many DO schools also have their own programs. I have no idea which programs are more helpful than others, so you should make note of that as well. This is not the time to dally so if you need something cleared up make a phone call to the program and get the info you need.

Best of luck.

Wow, a very helpful post. I was mainly just curious as there are a couple of schools that I am still hoping to hear from that have kept me under review throughout the entire cycle. I already have a couple of acceptances and will be going to medical school this August, but I really appreciate the time you took to write such a thorough response. I hope that others will meander into this post and benefit from your reply.

No problem. SDN was a big help during my own application season so I try to pay it forward.

Congratulations on the acceptances. As far as the review goes... I don't know, admissions are kind of a crapshoot. I know a person who applied to 20 schools and was rejected by everybody except for a top ten school. I was accepted to all 4 schools I interviewed at, but I didn't hear back from the majority of them at all.

Most schools say they interview through April, and my experience has been that applicants get about a 3 or 4 week notice for interview invites. That would seem to indicate that the last interview invites get sent out by the beginning of April.

You're probably right that its more of a trickle this time of year, though. Probably best to start planning for next cycle if you haven't heard anything yet.

+1, It also depends on when you completed your applications. Obviously the earlier you submitted the worse it is if you still haven't heard anything from the school. I am still waiting to hear anything from NYCOM and I was complete early Sept. At this point I'm pretty sure I wont get in, since they have had plenty of time to review my app and most importantly, have given out interviews and acceptances to people who applied the same time, and I'm in state. So overall, I think at this point there is little chance of getting accepted (maybe 5-10% if I had to guess) and if I don't hear anything by first week of April I'm going to book my flight to sunny South Florida to start looking for apartments around Nova.

Haha, ditto on the apartment hunt. I figure I'll wait until the first week in April before I call the fight, so to speak.

ha ya, I'll book the flight for early may and try to move in June 1. That way I figure I can have 2 months to enjoy the area with my wife, maybe go down to the keys and to Orlando to Disney world. Try to enjoy South Florida before I have to get down to business! 🙂
