It's been six weeks so far and after every single lecture, people applaud. I can't be the only one that thinks this is weird (guest speakers aside).

That phenomenon kind of faded away after the first couple of weeks at my school, other than the occasional guest/new lecturer or really well-done lecture.

Edit: Nice blog. 👍

Thanks!

It's been six weeks. Stop going to class.

Meh. I like to go to class. My undergrad had recorded lectures, too, and I always did better when I went to class.

i think it died out after like two weeks at my school
guest lecturers, the last lecture from a really good professor and important people like the dean still get applause though

I usually clapped, unless it was a heinous lecture. Just shows appreciation for the lecturer. Then again I was a class-goer. I missed less than 10 classes M1 and M2 year (aside from pharm, which was awful).

Pictured: me.

Any particular reason other than that? I feel like this is something people start doing in med school, and it baffles me as to why.

Clapping lasted all 2 years for us. Though, it was much quieter as fewer people attended class...

Yeah, it's weird at first. But then you kinda just do it without realizing it.

It continues during Residency & Fellowship as well with attendings getting applauded for run-of-the-mill lecture
Definitely weirder then since its a much smaller group

Every single lecture is a bit....much.

At the last day that a professor is lecturing makes sense. Every lecture can be kinda annoying.

huh??

No one in my class ever clapped after lecture unless a) they brought in a patient for a clinical case discussion (even then people clapped to thank the patient, not the professor) or b) we had a distinguished/famous guest lecturer visiting.

Now grand rounds and conferences are a whole other matter...

Lol I thought this was just something people at my school did.

It feels so weird. No one ever claps at the end of lectures in undergrad, Im not sure why people clap in med school.

I love this post so much I want to make it false promises at prom night!

Seriously though... this was never a thing at my school but I've heard of it. Stop it... stop it right now. There are only 2 reasons this happens. 1) someone is a kiss ass and lacks the foresight to know that faculty don't give a damn about pre-clinic students, or 2) the pre-med in you compels you (all lemming fashion) to go along with the nonsense so that you don't get out gunned by the guy described in #1.

Be respectful. The lecturer would much (to an epic degree) be asked questions about his or her lecture than to be awkwardly applauded off.

We are major clappers. We even organize particularly enthusiastic applause/standing ovation on our Facebook group during class.

 nice. I'd like to see a YouTube video of a mundane medical lecture just bringing down the house. Make it ridiculous. Just keep cheering and clapping and hollering until its way past awkward for your biochem professor.

it is such a douchebaggery act to applaud after a lecture.

This. My classmates were big clappers and I refused to clap (on the rare occurrence that I actually made it to class).

I just thought to myself, I am paying these people thousands upon thousands of dollars, why should I clap for them for doing their job?

I got a great laugh out of this - same thing going on at my school. Can't stand it.

I understand after a guest lecturer or a dean coming and giving a speech or something, but 15 anatomy lectures in.... people need to pump the brakes and relax. This phenomenon is usually spurred on by the student that wears a stethoscope around their neck or scrubs on a basic science lecture day.

We all clap at my school after every lecture. I used to feel weird about it but now I clap along not really on account of the lecturer, but because I am just happy to have another hour of lecture done.

I still hear claps at the end of every podcasted lecture from the remaining 20 students that still attend lecture. There's also people that clap at the end of any CBLs or small groups.

I watched lectures from home and whenever people started clapping at the end of the lecture, I clapped along with them.

Was I doing it right guise?

This is incredibly cringe-worthy

It's so funny to hear the clapping at 2x speed, like they were in a hurry to get the hell out of there.

they only clap around here if lecture ends early. or goes on a bit too long.

I wonder if we're at the same school OP.

I do hate that we keep doing it after every single lecture. We've been doing it for so long it's probably guaranteed it'll keep going for the rest of the year for every. single. lecture. Most of our lecturers are pretty awful, rushing through things and what not, and they still get applause. It's so silly. And it's not like it makes them go nicer on us or anything. And yet I always join in, although halfheartedly -_-

Also, even though I was a clapper, I only clapped if it was the lecturer's last/only lecture for us. It doesn't make sense to clap after every lecture if we see the same guy 5 times a week for a month.

Doesn't have to make sense when you look this good.

People clap at my school which is kinda gay, but there are people who do the last clap battle which I find hilarious and never gets old.

Yeah, I have a feeling this isn't going to die down for my class. I only join in when it's a guest speaker.

Man who cares about the clapping. OP don't you have better **** to do than worry about clapping after lecture? wtf?

My class still does it too for most lectures. Several of us keep joking about it, wondering how long it could possibly go on, but so far it has persisted.

The clapping...the horrible clapping. My class is pretty bad about it. Some of the other students recognize how funny it is and actually start the whole chain reaction by clapping two or three times....then its off to the races as the whole class decides to jump in. They think its funny. I think its annoying.

We have professors who sing through the Kreb's Cycle and play guitar and sing through fatty acid metabolism. You have to clap at that.

Lecture clapping? People do it, and it's ridiculous. The only reason I do it is if we have a patient panel or guest lecturer.

:laugh::laugh::laugh:

I need to start doing this with my class...

i'm the guy that tried to initiate random clapping in the class

real life trolling ftw
