any suggestions and what are the steps?

Before applying, you should have all your required courses finished by matricualtion to the dental school you are applying to.
Physics, Chem, Ochem, A&P, Biochemistry, These vary by school. Know which schools to apply to. Geography, Cost, Program, Specialty, are some factors to consider. Save money for interviews and Application fees.
In Short
May to June - AADSAS ON-LIne Application. Have all transcripts ready, Letter of Reccomendations, And $$$$.
Sept. to October- Take Your DATS. If you ahev not already taken your DATS, get ready.
September to April- Interviews. Sit tight for offers for interviews.
December to April - Acceptances

Before June, get your transcripts ready.
June 1st, fill out the application if you can get into the website. Last year, I couldn't sign in until June 5th.
After submitting your application online, send in your transcripts, LOR to AADSAS.
Then sign the checks and send money to each school.
Then sit and wait...and wait, and buy a suit.
And buy plane tickets...

In short, you should start the application process last month 😀
Get your letter of recommendations taken care of, so you won't have to worry about them later on down the road. Nothing is worse than to have a busy professor (or lazy?) take their time on writing you a letter, because you notified them late in the game.

My advise to you is to take care of the recommendations first because that's something you can't do on your own. That takes, not your time, but others'. Others that are above you, who needs to see you in good light: ie your professor, your boss, your contacts in administration, and ect...
Second step is your essay. This takes time to organize, not paper work organization, but your thoughts on how are you going to effectively and creatively or even logically justify your wish to join this profession.
Third step is easy, your AADSAS application materials, and all you need for that is transcripts form all your post secondary schools that you attended. And you also need your resume or CV to list your experiences and community services (When, where, and who) This step, if you have all the necessary papers, you can do it in one or two days. (few schools are not part of AADSAS, like the almighty Texas schools) I don't know why? (and the Canadian schools) don't know why either! The AADSAS starts accepting applications June first, so I would recommend to send it in as soon as first of June.
So by the time you are ready so submitt your AADSAS application to AADSAS, you should have your recommendation in school file (or send directly to your school of choice), your essay, your DAT scores, and your official transcripts that's ready to go!
Timing is also important, it depends on when you will take your DAT (you get your scores right there and then), so all you have to worry is just studying and doing well on your test day. So ideally, take your test before June and have your scores, and send out everything around June of 2003. (It takes about a month and a half to be processed by the AADSAS, and another month when it arrives at the schools of your choice.) If you do this, then you should get back your interview invitation around Sept or October, and you would set up your interview around October or Nov. Then it takes another two weeks or a month after your interviews to get your results back.
I personally took my DAT late October (I pushed it from Sept), and I sent my application early Nov. ( So I was late by two months and I was litterally crapping in my pants) but luckly I started getting interview invitation by mid Dec. and early Jan. And I held my interviews during Jan, Feb, and March (one everyweek) and I got back from all the school I wanted to hear from, but there are few that needs to come in but I couldn't care less now.

Make sure to prepare your essay and studt for the DAT. These take longer than you think. It took over a month for me to hammer out my essay.

I'm pretty new around here.. and i'm really planning on applying to dental schools in the near future... i'm just trying to gather some info!
What if i apply to 13 dental schools.. would that mean that as for LOF's, i would have to have 13 official LOF's, or can they just be photocopied? i have no idea how this works.. i'm studying in a canadian university, and pretty much confused abt how to actually get LOF's...and how many i should get...
How would I get a L.O.F from a biology prof, that might not know me, because lectures are pretty big... who would you ask for a Ref. letter??? Does it have to be a Science professor? does it even have to be a professor?? and how much or how far back can a letter of ref. be dated?? on avg. how many Letters of Ref. would i need?? would they have to be dated for a certain date??

I have a probably silly question. For the application fee, should I send them right after I submit my AADSAS application or I should send them after I receive the secondaries? Say, if I apply 20 schools, how much should I pay to AADSAS? Do the money include the application fee? Thanks for any help.

Hi grettlin2. As far as your question concerning application fees, you must pay AADSAS up front for each school your applying to (last year it was about $145 for the 1st school and $60 for each additional school--or, somthing close to that). Also, each school has an application fee that you send directly to the school. Some schools require that you send the money before your application is processed. All schools will contact you to request the subsequent fee. There is a list, I believe, on the AADSAS application website that has the contact #'s, address, and subsequent fee information for each school. On that list, there are indications as to whether the fee is sent immediately, or whether you wait to be contacted by the institution.
Personally, I contacted each school and asked them if it would be better to send my money, or to wait. Each office was receptive to my request, and I ended-up sending cash, in advance of their correspondence, to quite a few schools. Hope this helps.
