I am planning to submit my ERAS on the first day it's available 9/1 and I was thinking about taking my Step II in mid-August. I really want an excellent step II score to improve on my Step I. Is taking it in mid-August and updating my ERAS as soon as the score becomes available a disadvantage in any way? Will any of the programs look at my boards scores before the first half of September?? Should I take it earlier? Thanks.

You want to be able to release the score based on the results (i.e. hold it back if you have an unexpectedly weak score).
In general, the rule of thumb to make absolutely sure that you control the release of your step 2 score is to take it after you have submitted ERAS and told them NOT TO RELEASE SCORES AUTOMATICALLY. That way there is absolutely no way they can transmit the step 2 score without your approval. By taking it in mid August, you are more than likely going to not have the step 2 score by the time you submit ERAS and you could control the release of the score. However, if by chance you delayed submitting your application, or for some freak reason they were able to process your score prior to you submitting ERAS, then whatever you got would be automatically released.
