When to apply for residencies?

Hey guys,

My boyfriend is currently on rotations and fairly busy so I thought I would do some research for him to make sure he does not miss any deadlines. I understand that applications are due normally by December/January time. However, when is a good time to apply to your selected residencies? Does it even matter if you apply sooner than later?

I am relating the residency application process to applying to an undergraduate college since it is all I have experience with. Whereas applying early can help your chances. Does the same apply in residencies?

Maybe he shouldn't have his work done for him by someone else? He doesn't sound too invested in the residency application process.

We live long distance so I don't get to talk to him about it much. I'm sure he did the research, but I just want to know for myself. It doesn't hurt to get a second opinion does it?

I had the same thought.

It's an easy google search to find a timeline of when everything should be done (researching different places, contacting letter writers, getting prepared for midyear, etc).

Most places are probably going to use PhORCAS again this year and it doesn't open up until November if I remember correctly.

Yes, ashp has a residency directory and you can see all the residencies that are available and filter it down by state.

It's refreshing to see they still make girls like that. Thought my wife was the last of her kind. 😛

OP, yeah, others have a point, that he needs to communicate with you about his plan, as any man who has your in it would. Otherwise you might end up doing needless work But there is nothing wrong with you helping him after you two planned it out. My fiancee (wife now), helped me with a ton of non-work related stuff when I was crazy busy during residency. Work as a team is better when you are playing a non-zero sum game.
