Planning on using Taus method to prepare for step one, but not sure when I should buy books. Is it good to have them early on in the fall of 2nd year, so I can study them in parallel with my classes? Or should I wait to buy the most recent editions in the spring?

From what I've read on SDN, get FA, to focus on whatever coursework will be on the boards. Other than FA (which you'll have to buy the 2012 version of later), I'd probably wait on the other stuff.

You want the latest FA version for the year you will be taking the boards. 2012 should be coming out soon. You should follow along with classes you take in there, then purchase your boards books when you're ready to start studying.

This should help: http://medstudentbooks.com/category/boards/
