Hey guys. As an M3, I am interested in medicine and I was wondering when I should be scheduling my JI/sub I in order to start getting rec letters?

Currently I see that there aren't any spots available either in March with the current M4s or in september (by the time my application will be submitted). What should I do? Should I just ask the attendings under whom I did my M3 medicine rotation?

What's a JI? What about the rest of the summer? Ideally you want to schedule it for September or earlier to get the letters submitted in a timely manner. October would prob be doable too. You will probably need to ask your M3 attending as well. You need more than one letter.

Unfortunately there are no spots available over the summer. That's why I am trying to decide when it would be the best time to do this. Even october is pushing it since applications go out on september 1st so...

In general, you want letters in prior to Nov 1st. So september Sub I (away not your first at home) should work well for you.

See if you can do an away first then your home. Otherwise, just keep looking for openings.

Thanks for the info. I was always under the impression that you should do your home rotation before your away rotation so you don't look inept as visiting rotation is your chance to make a good impression.

This is true. You SHOULD also do all your SubIs in the summer/early fall.

Things don't always work out the way they "should." If you did reasonably well in your 3rd year rotations and feel you can hold your own at an away then you are probably better off doing an away and then your home just for scheduling purposes.

But its your choice: 1) Do your rotations very late and risk not getting letters in time (or worse - realizing as a SubI you don't really like IM) or 2) Do your away first and risk not making the best impression on that program.

Neither is a great option - but neither will destroy you. You just need to pick your poison.
