Hello, I am a second year med student and have the option to do a research elective at my school in ob/gyn. I am not sure if this is a good idea because of some other time constraints i have (including studying for step 1 since i am taking it at the begining of june).
I guess i am wondering how important is it to do some research in this field if it is what i hope to do my residency in? Can research be done later on? Because if i need to do it - i will , but I also dont want to get too overwhelmed.
Just so you know, i have no "research experience" yet . How important is it for residency applications/ interviews? I feel like i am starting to run out of time!!!

thank you for you help🙂

if you feel like you would compromise your ability to perform well on step 1 to get some ob/gyn research i say forget it. if you think you can do it then go for it. you have to figure it out for yourself.
considering that ob/gyn isn't that hard to match these days besides for the top programs, having research would be nice but shouldn't be necessary. in addition, you can take electives in ob/gyn later down the road that could further demonstrate your interest and potentially also get involved in a project down the road.
