So I realize that different programs have different deadlines, but when do most people typically start applying for audition rotations? Also is it bad not to have a letter from an EM doc this early?

You apply through VSAS (http://services.aamc.org/20/vsas/) for most programs. I think it opens in April or May. Since getting a spot is first come, first served at most places, get your app in ASAP. Ideally you'll want a SLOR from your away institution, as well as your home school.

I'm a DO student so I don't get to do VSAS, but they did have most dates listed on when their application process opens so thanks for the link though.

VSAS may open up for DO students this year. Stay tuned.

Not all programs use VSAS... So if you're particularly interested in a certain program, check out their residency site for deadlines (google works best).

As for timing, well, interviews typically start in November, and you want at least 2 SLORs & plenty of time for them to get done... So, July-August-September, IMHO, would be the best bets. October cuts it close... But is an option. Try to avoid them later than that.

Another option is June if you can; seniors are unloading procedures 2/2 senioritis, and the interns are much better seasoned, so minimal competition for attending attention... Caution, though, you need to be strong as this is a double-edged sword. More attention = higher likelihood for recall if performance is weak.

Good luck!
