This isn't an issue of whether I will send on or not. I am pretty much doing a gap year without much support so it isn't a question that I need to try and consolidate my trips since flying from Indiana isn't cheap (neither are lost wages).

Anyway...I wanted to know how early I should send an in the area email. I have a significant other in the LA area that I will be visiting in September, November, and likely December. For now, I have my flight booked for September and the dates of my trip defined. Should I send the in the area email now?

Also, is there ever a reason to give schools a reason why you will be in the area? I don't want them to think I have tons of interviews in LA (because I don't), but I am not sure if they care or want to know I am visiting a significant other. That is why I am applying in LA after all.

It may not help but it definitely wont hurt to let the schools know. They will most likely ignore it but at least you tried. As far as giving a reason, be honest. Visiting a SO is a very valid and understandable reason for being in the area. Plus this will show a little bit of "ties" to the area.

Do you think it would be too whiney to cite the expense of flying from Indiana and not being able to work? Its a very serious concern of mine...
