I just wrapped up an interview at a school. When should I send the LOI:

1. Now - before I have heard back from the adcom with a decision
2. After - their decision (my bet is waitlist)

Basically, we'll tell you don't do it.

You'll say you'll do it anyways.

And we'll all react with:

You should send them 3 each mailed 2 days apart just in case the first two get lost by that pesky postal service.

You need to wait in-person beside the Dean's car and then deliver the message in a mini-musical.

Lol on a more serious note, if your school is open to it then probably pre-decision would be more helpful if it would have an effect.

I've actually had several dean of admissions say to send LOIs if you truely want to attend their school and also to sends letters of interest because they love hearing that students enjoyed the school.

I understand why adcoms may not like these letters, but I feel like many other adcoms propagate the letter writing system

Ohhh boyyyyyy. There was quite a longggg thread on this not so long ago. Look it up if you want, but I'm not going to say anything more lollll.

I did not do an LOI. In fact, I was not told about this until after my acceptances. We learn something new everyday 🙂.

First, see if the school is receptive to them. Some schools are adamant about not accepting updates of any kind except for things like institutional actions. That being said, I'm not entirely sure why they are so widely vilified on SDN. Two schools that I interviewed with encouraged us to send them updates or letters of intent if we were sure we wanted to go there. I doubt they're particularly efficacious, but if they accept them I see no reason not to send them a letter that emphasizes your fit with the school and that does not sound entitled or desperate. Obviously, if they don't accept them then don't send the letter because you will come off as annoying and unable to follow rules.

*sigh* And how would you interpret a nonbinding contract from a desperate applicant?
