Recently I read a post that mentioned that some schools dont want LORs unless they send you a secondary. I have never heard of this. I was just planning on having the letter service send them out as soon as I sent the AMCAS app. How do I know the policy of the schools to which I am applying? I went to a few websites with no luck. Please help!!

You never heard of this? Where did you hear of anything else? Don't send out letters until requested. You don't even know what letters the schools want!

The schools will send secondary applications and it is then that they will request letters of recommendation. Don't send it before because they will probably end up just trashing it. Also, as mentioned above, realize that schools ask for different combinations of recommendation letters and you can probably find this information on their websites. Hope this helps....

Welcome to SDN! 🙂 It's a confusing process, so you are not alone. But you've found SDN, and that's half the battle!! It would be nice if the whole thing could be standardized, but each medschool persists in thinking that their program is completely unqiue and thus requires very unique information about you that only a secondary can provide (usually a rehash of what you've already provided on AMCAS, in a completely different format, of course, but in some cases, they actually do want more and different information from you, and sometimes, groan, more essays!). Of course, in some cases, they only want money!! 😀 While the most common configuration of rec letters requested will be 2 science and 1 non-science, some schools ask for a humanities professor instead of non-science, and some specify 1 each from bio, chem, physics and humanities. Most people send "extra" letters as well, from bosses, doctors, etc. But some schools (like Tulane) say not to send any extra letters! The only way to get around this logistical nightmare is if your school has a committee (which med schools seem to prefer, they require you to use it if your school has one) that collects all your LOR's and then writes a composite letter. My school didn't have one, but did have a letter service, which made it easy to have all the letters sent there, and then they would send out whichever ones I asked them to send out whenever I needed them sent. If the school has an on-line secondary that you can get to without an invite, you can likely find what they want in the way of LOR's there. And I know lots of schools have it on their websites. Good luck. It's a grueling process, but it's not impossible. Be sure to keep records of everything (when you requested/sent, it, who you spoke to, etc), and definitely read Jalbrekt's Official Guide to Applying to Med School.
