My wife is about to start her Peds Anesthesia fellowship this summer and will finish in 2014, and has asked me to start feeling out the job market for her.

We would like to be the Charlotte, NC area when done.
When should we start looking for her job?
Some of her classmates that aren't going into specialities were able to secure their jobs many many months before even graduating.
Do I contact recruiters?
Hospitals directly?
What kind of compensation and call schedule can we expect?

Thanks.

By all means do the general research, but when it comes to contacting people in the business about a specific role somewhere, your wife needs to make the calls herself.

This !

And really - the Charlotte area isn't exactly huge. Being that restrictive on your choice of area immediately limits your options.

The Charlotte area seems to be dominated by American Anesthesiology nee Southeast Anesthesiology Consultants... A plus is that most of the providers, especially in their top tier hospitals are fellowship trained. I interviewed there about 6 years ago and found them to be all very very intelligent and seemed quite capable. The AMC structure was already in place then, and now it's even more ingrained..... Pay seemed average...

I started interviewing in October for jobs starting the following October.. I signed my contract in January but it never hurts to look too soon though..

If not contacting recruiters... then is a direct contact with the hospitals and anesthesia groups the best way to approach it?

We've checked gaswork.com, and a job that looked good for her was one from the presbyterian anesthesia group. They had a peds opening, no calls no weekends if you did not want the partnership track, which is what my wife would prefer.

Then there's the south east anesthesia group. I've checked the Carolinas Medical Center site, and they said they need pretty much somebody in every department and there's an email address for what seems like a recruiter.

What are consider big markets for anesthesia at this time?

Thanks.

she should start looking NOW. the biggest mistake i made was starting my job search midway through my final year because i thought starting earlier was "too soon;" and that was despite an attending telling me that it's never too early. i really screwed myself - it was pretty slim pickings by that time.

This again.
Charlotte really only has 2 groups. Presbyterian, at Presbyterian, and American (Southeast) everywhere else.

I think networking is key to any job search. If you have some type of connection you are going to have a vastly easier time getting the job than a random resident sending an email or calling the OR. For example, I just searched for the North Carolina Society of Anesthesiologists. I see on their webpage they have their annual meeting in Asheville in September. Go to that meeting and talk to everyone and find as many people from Charlotte as you can and tell them you want a job. As a bonus, you may meet someone who has an opening for your ideal job in a city you hadn't considered before.

Previous posters are correct in that it is never too early to start looking for a job. However, in my recent job search I found that most groups couldn't forecast their job openings > 6-9 months out because they weren't positive if so-and-so was going to retire next year, or they were pending contract renegotiation, etc.

Good luck.

When looking for jobs.
What can we expect in terms of weekends, calls and hours?

Depends whether urban/suburban/rural job and academic setting or PP. Assuming she will be fulltime, it will be less than residency/fellowship but not by much, and in some places more.
