I was wondering when it was recommended that students submit their applications in the 2017 cycle. I couldn't find a solid answer the aamc website. Thank you!

The first day it opens... this year you could starting working on the application in AMCAS on May 1st and could submit starting on June 7th. The earlier the better!

Do we have any idea what the essay prompts will be? I'll be working this summer, so it will be difficult to dedicate every hour to writing my applications.

There's only one prompt for the primary essay (i.e. Personal statement) and it's always the same.

If you are talking about each school's specific secondary essays, go here. Each year, people post the essays that are in the secondary... some schools change every year, some don't.

The primary application only has one "essay" and there's really no prompt. It's really a "personal statement" that allows you to write anything you want - most people write about why they want to pursue medicine, as that is the most prudent thing to do. But that's it - no other essays.

The essays come in July, when the bulk of the secondaries come out. You will be able to find the essay prompts for these on the Prospective Doctor website, which has a compilation of secondaries by school for the past few years. The prompts for individual schools might change slightly from year to year but most don't (you will encounter many similar prompts so these are the ones to focus on first). It's a good idea to pre-write secondary prompts but a year out is too early. A lot happens in a year and you change/grow a lot. So pre-writing secondaries would be a good idea in June after you've submitted your primary and (hopefully!) have free time during summer break or before work starts. Pre-writing secondaries helps you make your application complete at the schools as quickly as possible, which helps get your application reviewed faster and IIs out in the first wave (you also have to be competitive for that though, so don't sacrifice quality for quantity).

Best to submit as son as you can as long as you're ready. Generally the first day you can submit your app is at the beginning of June.
