Even when you don't know the right answer, you can often eliminate at least one or two that you know are wrong, so this will be different each time.

I think we are over-thinking this. I think a more correct pole question would be "Which letter choice do you think is most often correct?"

I tend to use the old Sega Genesis "Mortal Kombat" algorithm aka the blood code: ABACABB repeatedly throughout the exam if I have to guess.

Yeah you can pretty much always eliminate SOMETHING and then some of the other terms somehow look familiar. Which is more effective than blindly guessing a letter.
