What exactly is meant by making up for low GPA elsewhere?

I read in a book about medical school applications, that your chances are pretty much:

GPA/MCAT = 60%
Personal Statement = 25%
EC's = 15%

Do you guys think these are reasonable figures?

Also, do you think that dental and medical schools are pretty much the same in terms of what they are looking for?

I have a low GPA and high DAT and five interviews. It depends on the school though.

Anything that shows a passion for dentistry can make up for a sub-par GPA.

Oh yeah, and slamming the DAT helps.🙂

I have a good personal statment - 25% for me!!!!!!!!!🙂

So your olympic body is the other 75%

Jk GF I know you are a stinkin genius 🙂

You have to make it past the school's GPA/DAT cutoff before most will even begin to look at the rest of your application (aka EC's and Personal Statement)...If you don't make the cut, your 'unique experiences/circumstances' may never be brought into the light. It seems dental schools can be mighty picky now-a-days.

Not exactly the same. As far as I understand, med school would really like to see some lab work or research. And you should know a bit about medicine, whereas though you need to shadow a dentist, you're not expected to know anything specifically about dentistry when you matriculate. (empty braaaaiiins...they want braiiiinnns.) Some of the high research d-schools will definitely want research, but it's not a requirement at most.

Also, I've heard that med schools want a lot of ECs related to medicine....being an EMT, volunteering at a hospital, etc. Dental schools like you to be the most unique person they've ever met 😉

Both require super GPAs and test scores, of course....and will look at those before they consider the others.
