Ripping off someone else's thread idea....

Anyhow, are any of you going to the Second look weekend? And did anyone receive a letter from UCONN trying to convince you to matriculate?

C.

I replied to your second look weekend thread...but I'm very torn between UConn and UNC right now. I have no idea which one to choose!! 🙂 A person from UNC called today to try to talk me into coming. I'm really waiting on Cornell, because I loved that school. Then again...I loved Pitt too...

Are you definitely going to UConn?

SK,

Doesn't it feel good that these schools are now doing the chasing? Hee hee.

I'm not sure about UCONN. It is my #1 choice as far as American schools go. Being a Canadian student, I have applied to three Canadian schools (we only have five in the whole province and it's near impossible to get in to out-of-province schools).

I would rather stay in Canada for mostly financial reasons (the Canadian dollar is currently a big joke, and with international student tuition rates, I may end up with a hefty debt if I head south). Canadian schools do not have rolling admissions, so I won't hear from them for a while. Interview invitations have only started going out. Final decisions will be made on the last business day in May. These schools like to take their time.

So, for now, I'm dealing with attending UCONN as a big possiblity, which means doing such things as submitting the deposit, going to Second Look, and arranging research for the summer.

Cheika my dear,

I hear ya with the Ontario school waiting game. You would figure that since they have so many less applicants than the American schools that they would be able (logisticall) to get through things faster. Guess not, hey?!?

I'm gunna wait on the second look weekend until I hear from some of the Canadian schools I applied to re: interview. Hopefully this'll be in the next couple of weeks, however, I know Mac does not send out until March 1st at the earliest. I am really looking forward to going to second look weekend though if there are no interviews around here at that time - I think it sounds like some good fun! UConn remains my first choice in the states too 🙂 If I don't end up going, I'm gunna plead a case for Shamthis to get my spot!!

What research are you planning for the summer?? Do you want to do it here in Onatrio, or in the states? I'm gunna be working until June or so in my current job, then plan on taking about 2 months to do a little travelling. Figure this would be the perfect time, seeing as how the next number of summers will be spent doing electives and what not.

Keep us updated as to any Canadian school newz.

SK-- you'd leave Blue Heaven for UConn? *sniff sniff*

siiigh...i hope my fellow tar heel is happy wherever she ends up! 😀

UConn:
the school itself was OK but I am someone who normally interviews spectacularly and I had the biggest A$$HOLE interview me at UConn. He left me with the WORST possible impression. It's too bad they have him on their interview staff b/c before I went, UConn was my 1st choice and now I wouldn't even go if they took me! 😛
Let me give you an example:

"Here's some paper; can you draw me a map of Afghanistan and label all the countries around it?"

"Who won the world series in the year you were born?"

"Who's the #1 female golfer right now?"

"What are your goals?" ...I told him... "Well that will never happen, so you better start thinking of some new ones."

What a PR!CK?!?!?!?!?!?!??!

😕 😕 😕 😕

ST: I'm feeling this big urge to venture out and be on my own. I dunno what it is really...but I kinda want to start out somewhere new...where I don't know that many people. We'll see though 🙂

But then again...our basketball team is going to be good in a few years...and I wanna stick around for it!

Chi: Yeah, it definitely feels good 🙂 If only I'd hear from everywhere else... 🙂 🙂

**edit: My friend had that SAME interviewer! UConn's a great school, though...don't sweat it!

If you are going to choose Canadian schools over UCONN because of finance and have withdrawn from all the US schools except UCONN, then why do you want to go to second look? It should not change your decision in anyway. Plus, it is mostly a show put up by admissions office anyway. I would personally save the money and go to one more interview.

Why arranging research for the summer? Unless you are MD/PhD, you should enjoy your summer before med school catching up with friends and family and maybe take a trip cross Canada to visit the beautiful British Columbia 😛

Sista Karen....I hope you get Cornell and your other hopefuls too! I hear ya with the change of scenery bit. I lived at home for my entire undergrad, and when I had the opportunity to go away for graduate school, I jumped at the opportunity. Of course the program was excellent, but it was the other intrinsic things that appealed to me more. After the experience of landing somewhere completely foreign, fitting in and surviving, learning a new place/culture, and making some new great friends, I encourage anyone to take up on such an opportunity. I figure I'll be in school for quite a while longer, so might as well travel and see new places while in school!

In response to MD2007Hopeful...I'm sorry about the rough interviewer. Those do sound like some heinous interview questions - quite deviant from the norm to say the least. I have to say, however, that I think this must have been the anomaly, cause the school itself seemed very student centred in every facet. If I was a spectacular interviewer, I would have tried to be adaptable to his style, introduce some humour on the wierd questions, and be assertive and stick to my values, convictions and aspirations. But that's just me.

Anyway, good luck SK, and congrats to you all with your acceptances to date. Hope you all end up at the right place for you individually.

DAMN! 😱
Did you post these in the most bizzare interview moment thread?

Anyway, I didn't have the same interviewer, but I got grilled at UConn - I'm MD/PhD, though. Still, they really went all out on the science. I felt like I was defending a freakin dissertation.
Otherwise, I spent 2 summers at UConn and really liked it. I won't end up going, but it's a cool school.

Oh...I understand. I've been in Chapel Hill for 9 years now and am ready to get out. If I have the opportunity to choose between UNC and ECU, it's going to be a really hard decision. Best of luck to you wherever you end up...once a Tar Heel always a Tar Heel! You can always come back for basketball games. 😀

Wow...thanks for the good advice! 🙂 It's a hard decision to make. I'm still considering all of my options. We'll see.

And you are SO right Sweet Tea. I'm definitely a Tar Heel for life!

MD2007, I heard about that guy when I was up there. I was lucky enough not to get him. From what I hear, his behaviour is aberrant and in no way representative of the rest of the UCONN faculty. I hope you don't let him sway you! 😉

Thewonder, you make some excellent points, which I've considered already, but am now reconsidering... I can't decide.... I guess I'll let the transportation costs decide for me.

As to research, I think it's for next summer. They've sent out applications already. The deadline is March 14. I have to find a faculty supervisor and everything. I don't know how to go about this whole thing - someone tell me I'm mistaken!!!!! 😕 😕 😕

Bizzak, when will you hear from Dal? Do they do the last business day in May thing too. What is up with Canadian schools? 😡 😉

I did that summer research program last summer. Finding someone to work with isn't that difficult. I found the easiest thing was to just email the Dept. head of whatever you want to do, and they'll help you out. I worked in the Department of Community Health and Medicine (or something...) last summer. It was really simple and I found someone to be my faculty mentor really quickly.

Holy cow! Thanks- I just read this. I'm so o o o o frustrated with UConn right now. I've almost got it in me to surrender any remaining chances I have with UConn by writing a nasty letter. I want them to know that there's no reason they should continuously turn down an applicant who has proven himself capable of the curriculum, genuinely interested in medicine - learning, and a nice guy to boot. More, they're wrong to frown upon a student who's as eager to attend UConn as I am. I applied early last year...wrote several letters of interest...had a phone conference with the dean over the summer...changed everything I was told to change...wrote more letters of interest... demonstrated further interest... and still no love. Sure, this is a competitive process but I've worked so hard for UConn and they've screwed me again and again.

I don't want UConn anymore.

Just curious how long after your interview you heard from UCONN. They told my group 8 weeks and I am at the end of week 8. Congrats to those going, hopefully I will be going too . . .
Thanks

Hey brstrife,

I heard back from UConn roughly 6 weeks after I interviewed there. They too told me 8 weeks, but I was fortunate enough to hear back from them before that. It was such a pleasant surprise!!

Good luck...hope you get some good news soon.

MD2007, I had the same interviewer! He asked me almost identical questions!

GuesswhozBizzak,
Thanks for the reply, I guess any day now I will hear, good or bad. I hate to bug the admissions people but Conn is my #1 choice and if I get in then I am done with this whole application thing. Not a bad experience at all, but tiresome IMO. I'll be cheering for both basketball teams no matter what happens!!

For those of you who encountered the "interviewer from hell" at UConn, could you please post his/her name? We may as well be forewarned!

Thank you!

For those of you who had the pleasure of interviewing with the "interviewer from hell" at UConn, would you mind sharing his/her name? We may as well be forewarned!

How did UCONN let those who were accepted or rejected know?

They let you know with a small, regular sized letter. Don't be scared if it is thin, cause it could be an acceptance 🙂 🙂

Also, they tell you the day you should expect to hear by. If that day has gone by already, call them, and they will tell you on the phone. They are good like that!!
