Where are good places to volunteer?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Rehabilitation hospital. I volunteered at one specializing in peds and was able to get tons of hands on experience with patients. Like physically assisting therapists in performing therapy. Def hard to beat in terms of quality clinical experience.

This is totally dependent on where you live and what you want to do. I personally enjoy volunteering at our Food Harvest center and doing street clean ups. I also did a lot of tornado relief projects in Joplin. If you actually like what you are doing, it's going to come off as a lot more sincere during an interview when you are asked about it. I didn't see the point of volunteering in a hospital since I work in one already.

I guess I just need to keep looking online. I would apply to hospitals but I already work in an ER so I would rather volunteer elsewhere like you..

It shouldn't be too hard to find something. Places to volunteer could be the humane society, a homeless shelter, soup kitchen, etc etc. There are also websites that will list volunteer organizations within your community.

I would check out this link to see if it will help.

Thanks. I will check that out. Also, do you think it looks bad that I'm starting volunteering almost a year after my undergrad? Or does it not matter as long as I get some meaningful life experiences?

Not really. Some people just don't volunteer during undergrad because they have other obligations. I worked full time and went to school, so my volunteer experience was fairly limited other than my summers. Just as long as you can get some hours of volunteer time that is meaningful to you, I think you will be fine.

If you're willing to do service for a year/11 months, you can try an AmeriCorps program; I'm currently in one and I really enjoy it. Feel free to PM me for details.

Honestly, consider an internship or job in research. A publishing and experience will open up a lot of options.

You can check craig's list and see if there is any volunteer opportunities in your area.

Non-clinical: try any of your local houses of worship for opportunities.

Clinical: I always am impressed with people who volunteer at hospice, nursing homes, camps for sick children, or working with sick children in general.

I am currently in my first gap year after my undergrad. My MCAT score came back and I know I am going to have to wait for 2016 to apply.
I'm looking to gain some meaningful volunteer experiences as I do not have any right now. Does anyone have suggestions of places I should look out for?

I volunteered at a community health center for the homeless for 3 years in undergrad. I also did 3 summers at a youth cancer camp, and 1 summer in SE Asia doing disaster preparedness training and Emergency Medical Services education outreach.

The first two ideas wouldn't be hard to find I wouldn't think.

Check out the the NHCHC website, there should be a way to find a local clinic there: https://www.nhchc.org

I would be interested in doing this but how do I get into research after I already graduated I got a BS in biological science but never did any research during undergrad

I volunteer at habitat for humanity for there construction crew, i literally build homes for the needy. It's a sweet gig, but you have to enjoy construction and be able to do long labor hours...

Do you have to have any previous knowledge or experience or do they teach you? I don't know much about construction but I know I could handle the labor.

I've been building things all my life, taking apart engines, working with tools, etc, so it's natural to me. But there are people there who don't know jack **** about anything...literally cant hammer a nail straight...so don't worry. You just wont be doing the same things as me or the other experienced members, but you can still help a lot and say you do that the same thing on the app. They also have a teaching course, not sure how it is... its free though!

I agree with this, there are alot of people volunteering at hospitals for med school and thats great but diversity in volunteering cant hurt

I volunteer with a rape crisis center that sends individuals (me!) when I'm on call to the hospital to be a confidential support system to victims there- while the doctors do exams and cops take reports of what happened. It's highly clinical but also, according to most of my interviews, really unique. However working with people in crisis is not a skill everyone has- but it will prepare you better to deal with the human side of patients.

hospital call and speak with volunteer depatment
