Hey all,
I have made my final decision- I'm going to be attending Loyola next year. So where are all my classmates of the class of 2007 at?

I wish I could say I am your classmate. I hope the waitlist is kind to me and then maybe I will be able to say that!!! 😉 I have my fingers and toes crossed.

Congratulations on making your decision and going to Loyola! That is awesome!

I cant believe it...my decision is finally made! I am totally moving out to Chicago and starting at Loyola...and must admit I'm a bit freaked about the whole thing, but really excited! How soon are people moving into the area? I was thinking about living in Oak Park....do you guys know when the school is sending out that roommate list? Anyways - I'll stop asking questions for now and bask in the fact that a year later, I finally know where I am ending up.

Hey man I've been waitlisted at Loyola and will probably go there if I get pulled off the waitlist. Right now though, Pritzker is my first choice and I'm waitlisted there. If it doesn't work out I'd love to be your classmate at loyola. 🙂

Count me in the list of Loyola SSOM Class of 2007 as well (unless I hear anything from OHSU in the next few months).

I am moving to Chicago in the first week in July, basically so I can go to Taste of Chicago. I will be living in Elmhurst (a little west of Maywood) with a few of my old buddies from ND. It will be a bit of a commute every morning, but I won't be able to find a better deal closer to campus.

I can't wait to start at SSOM. Good luck with the apartment hunt and I'll be seeing you in July.

meh

I'll be joining you guys at Loyola next year, I've made up my mind finally. I'm probably moving back to the chicago area in early July, but not sure where I'm gonna be living yet.

I'll see you guys this summer...Loyola looks like it can be a good time!
I am going to look for apartments in a couple of weeks...I am thinking about living in Chicago, does anyone know how far or annoying a downtown Chicago to Maywood commute is?

When I interviewed at Loyola, I stayed with some first years and they took me to dinner in Chicago. They've got friends who live downtown and supposedly the commute isn't bad out of the city in the mornings, and back in in the evenings. It's the reverse of that commute that's the problem. If you're ok with the higher cost in the city, you should go for it. You can take public transportation all the way to campus, so you could even get a little studying done on the way.

Yay...glad to meet some new classmates of mine! I am so happy to have made my decision and begin to move on and arrange stuff. Who has posted on Loyola's bulliten board?

Alrighty...a couple of things...
The commute is can be very bad. I drive the 290 expressway near loyola all the time (on the ambulance I work on) and it can be nasty at absolutely random times throughout the day. From about 7:30-9:30 am it can have be very very slow travel times. However, I did speak to somebody that does it and his 25-45 minute commute each way doesn't bother him. Depends on your preference. I would love to live in Lakeview but I think I'm going to just go to my sister who lives there on the weekends that I have time to do so.
Try to come to the chicago to find an apartment as soon as you can. I don't want to scare anyone, and I'm sure things will work out for everyone...I saw about 11 apartments in Oak Park this Wednesday (and found something I like thank goodness, my parents will go see it this coming wednesday!). Two of the realators who were showing me apartments said that they are getting lots of students now, from UIC, Loyola, and even Rush. It just made me want to get moving on this and find something asap.
If you have any questions about Chicago (and now I've learned a bit about Oak Park geography as well) feel free to ask.

Well, it's confirmed today. I just got denied from OHSU. So, Loyola here I come. It feels great to finally be set on one place.

Howdy my fellow Loyola Ramblers... I saw this thread a while back, so I thought I'd dig it up and add to it. I'm so excited to meet you all! My parents and I have done the day-long drive through all the towns down there, and we've agreed to focus on Elmhurst for finding a place to live. I liked Oak Park and Forest Park a lot too, and Riverside looked nice (and expensive) but Elmhurst just feels more my style, so mhiro -- you and I might be neighbors! I'll have to skip 290, though, and take Roosevelt, from what Plucky says. My dentist went to Loyola, and he mentioned he lived in North Riverside, but also recommended Berwyn. Good luck finding places to live! Just think -- in a little over two months we're all going to be in class together...

Heya Badgergirl! I am very excited, I found a great apartment in Oak Park. It's technically a two bedroom but it's at a one bedroom price. It's in a newer building by Oak Park standards. The landlord is this cute old man who lives in the building in one of the apartments (it has only 4 apartments) with his wife. There's plenty of space, central air, and parking behind the building included! I'll probably be moving in July 1st. Some of us classmates moving in before orientation have to find each other to hang out together. I think I will still be working (3x a week) but I'll have plenty of time.

Just adding to the list, another soon to be MS1 at Loyola. Chicago is a great town and i'm pumped to be moving from dreary old Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Like Pluckyduk said, you all should check out the webforum online. It's another way of finding roomies, school info, etc.

Other than that, I can't wait to get situated (hopefully July 1) and meet everyone end of July.

See you then,

Joe

I already posted at the webforum...I wonder how many who posted already are also sdners. If you look at the forum, I'm the emt. 🙂. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone.

I am so jealous of you right now... you already have a place lined up!! And you get to live near all the Frank Lloyd Wright stuff, too -- it's gorgeous down there. Ah, well. I'm coming down from WI this weekend to start the search. We should definitely try to start meeting people before orientation -- I'm not planning on moving completely until the week or so before b/c of work, but my goodness - I just got so amped and it's only May!! 😀

I'm so glad I got it done with. I saw about 11 apartments in one day. It was sooo crazy, and I was wiped out after that and did not want to have to do it again. I love the area where the apartment is. I am right near Harlem between Chicago and Division. I love that it's walking distance from downtown and the train, it's really close to school, and that it's in a nice, safe area. This is my first time being in an apartment on my own and I'm totally nervous. Just a matter of getting used to, right? Good luck on your search!

Kinda off topic maybe, but what's our mascott? Are our school colors red and white??? I just realized I don't know this crucial info.😉

Thanks

Joe

Colors are maroon (or something close to it I think) and yellow. Mascot is called the ramblers...it looks also like a wolf.

I've got a random question for you guys... have you sent in those 8 pictures yet? I almost forgot, but that deadline isn't for 2 more weeks (I hope). I have ones from last summer that I got for all the secondaries, but my hair is about 4-5 inches longer now, and I'll be getting contacts. Does it really matter? And will the next packet have all the immunization info? I recently moved around all of my books and papers to "clean," which incidentally means that I lost half of my med school stuff... ah, the joys of living in a tiny apartment. 🙄

Hm...I think I gotta sit for those pictures. Thanks for reminding me... My graduation pics are expensive, and I used some of them for apps so I don't have too many left. I don't know how important the pictures are, but my assumption is that they will be used for your school id (unless that's gonna be a digital picture that they'll take later), records, and the like.

I called them a while ago (probably around 2 weeks ago) about the immunizations and to see if they required anything else so I can make appointments. They didn't have it ready but they said it will go out in the next mailing.

I gotta take care of getting a copy sent of my transcript, too. Don't forget!

thanks plucky... i found some pics of me that'll work and sent them off today. i also need to remember about the transcripts -- the good thing is getting to leave work long enough to go across campus to get it!

It's good to see this thread up and running again. And thanks to everyone for the reminder about the pics. I forgot them too.

Speaking of packets from Loyola, has anyone recieved another since the one asking for transcipts and pictures in April? It's been sort of quiet and I hope I didn't miss one.

Badgergirl - I think you will like Elmhurst. It's not as nice as Lakeview or some of the other N. Chicago areas but the convenience makes it worth while. I like the little downtown area (it has some nice coffee shops, Irish pubs and this unbelievable ice cream place). I also took the Metra into the loop one day and it was really easy. It leaves riight from the middlle of Elmnhurst and drops you at CitiBank Building in 20 minutes. Not bad!

I am still concerned about the drive to school every morn. Hopefully it won't be that bad and we can find a route that missed the big intersections.

Anyway, I will be moving around the 1st of July so if you need a place to stay or need help moving in, let me know.

Good luck with tha apartment search and if you have any questions, email me at [email protected]

Hey guys,
So I have decided on Loyola after just being invited this past Friday. Thank god for waitlists right? I'm really looking forward to be moving to Chicago in July. I'm in St. Louis now and have to settle for the occasional weekend road trip to chi-town. I haven't received my info packet yet, however I can imagine what to expect with all of this talk of pictures and so forth.

Rob

Congrats Just an fyi, your soonest deadline is as far as I can tell is July 7th for the pictures...Somebody please correct me if I am wrong on this or forgetting something. One question for you folks about financial aid. It said if we signed a promissory note for the stafford loans we don't need to go to the online site I think. So that means if we have taken out stafford loans we don't need to do anything additional right? If I am not taking private loans at this time is there anything else I need to do (I confirmed my award letter). I just got confused by all of this.

i don't have the packet in front of me, but wasn't the photo due date june 7th? now i can't remember. ah, well. the silly question i had for you all was whether or not we're supposed to send them a copy of our SS card, or just bring it to orientation. maybe i just can't read anymore now that i've graduated college (a shame, really), but i just didn't understand with all that other stuff about visas being photocopied. can't help on the financial aid Q's because like an idiot, i forgot to submit something, so i ain't got any financial aid yet.

mhiro - i am very excited about living in elmhurst -- i love the little downtown area! we've been looking everywhere, but my parents are talking of buying a TH/condo b/c my older sister and her bf might be looking to move to the chicago area for jobs, and then they could live with me. it looks like we found some feasible ones in market square, so i'm going back this weekend to see more places. where will you be living? and which is the ice cream place? that stand on north and york? i saw a ben&jerry's somewhere, too, and all those pubs. i'll be moving about a week before orientation, so we'll have to get together!

I just double checked and it says July 7th...anyone else who understands financial aid lingo? (I swear it all goes over my head).

I am sorry I did not post earlier, but I have been out of the country. I, too, will be a fellow SSOM classmate. I am thrilled to death to be starting (even though it does seem a little bit early), but I am also worried that I am missing some form or financial aid info. Therefore, I am going to run through my financial aid process and if I am doing it wrong or if anybody has anything to add, please do so. I so far have filled out the FAFSA, filled out Loyola's FA form, received the electronic award letter, applied for Stafford loans thru northstar, and I am now in the waiting stages. I understand that the agency (northstar) sends my application to the Loyola and then Loyola has the final say in the amount of money for the Stafford and the actual sending of the money to me. Does anybody know if this comes in one lump sum or if they divide out it over the semester in payments?

thanks,

aarn20

Hey everyone, I'll be attending Strich as well. 😀
Now I gotta start looking for an apartment and getting all my financial aid stuff together. I'm with you Plucky, when it comes to this Fin Aid lingo I have no clue

Alrighty, I finally called the financial aid office to see what I had to do still. The packet admissions sent out had two websites to go to for financial aid to apply for your loans. The one with the stafford loan had a typo (missing an o) and the webpage didn't exist. The corrected website is:

https://www.theloanprogram.org/theoonline/prequalify.asp

We have to go to these two websites and in the next packet there will be a direct deposit form. If we are getting extra money beyond tuition that will be deposited for us in our bank accounts we have to fill this out and that should be about all that is left to do.

I'm considering switching banks to bank one so that I'll have access to a bank close to oak park. Anyone have experience with bank one? Do they have free checking and online banking? I would assume so because they are so big...

I'm joining Bank One this weekend! My parents use it for checking, I believe, and every time I've passed the one in my town I see a sign that says Free Checking in the window, so I'm hoping it will be. I also wanted it for an ATM card (and the ATM I saw over by the rec facility was a Bank One, so no fees, hopefully). If you're not planning on doing it right away I can get back to you after this weekend and let you know what their deal is...

Sweet. I currently have a no-fee checking (but no interest gained on it I think) and a savings. Lemme know how it goes. This bank would be good for me because there are locations close to me currently and locations in school.

So, I recieved the newest packet sent by Loyola yesterday. The schedule seems a little intimidating.

But, I have a question for you guys. The packet mentioned the incoming student forum on the meddean.lumc.edu website. I have the login and password but I can't even get on to the site. I go to the Student Info site and then click on the link to the Incoming Student WebForum but my browser can't open that page. Has anyone else had this problem? Should I change my browser settings?

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Bump....anything new folks?

Nothing much new for me....

Found a place living with a couple soon to be MS3's over in Forest Park (on madison). Pretty stoked about making the move. Rent is gonna be dirt cheap!

I was also contemplating whether to change banks. Is it a real hassle if you're checks are out of state? Have any of you had problems with this?

Should i close out the account in michigan and open up a new one in chi-town?

Just thinking out loud.

Joe

Hey jofrbr76- I've never had a problem writing out-of-state checks (my current bank is a credit union at my school in WI), but I opened a Bank One account a couple weekends ago so that I don't get hit with ATM fees all the time. Also, the only places I've ever written checks were grocery stores like Jewel or Dominick's, or clothing stores or banks. Maybe smaller businesses wouldn't let you. I guess, though, that since places like Walgreens or any grocery store will let you get cash back with a debit card, you wouldn't have to worry about those fees too much. Does your bank let you do online banking? That might make a difference. So are you living with those two guys that had the $775 apartment or whatever? That is pretty cheap. 😉

I have another question for you all about the direct deposit thing. Is there a time frame on that? The checks I ordered haven't come yet, and I don't want to put any financial aid money in my WI checking account, since I'm closing it out when I move.

Anyway, I'm glad to see this thread resurrected. I have yet to find a place to live, but I'm still working on it. It's only about 7.5 weeks or so away now, which is exciting!

Hey -
I don?t know if you guys are feeling this too, but I am SOOO stressed about this moving thing!! I have been waiting on pins and needles for the roommate list to come out - I am leaving the country for two weeks on the 17th, so I kind of wanted to get stuff all squared away before then. What do you think about living by yourself the first year? Good idea? Bad? I have no clue - I would just really like to get something figured out soon. Let me know what you guys have heard!

My bank is 5/3 bank, have no idea if they have'em in chicago area.

To answer Badgergirl:
Yeah, i'm living with those 3rd year guys, i think it should work out, but if not, i'm not signing any lease, and i don't have to put in for the security deposit, so i have the option to move out whenever. I don't really see it as being a problem though, they seem cool.

Hey J244, don't stress. Lots of people live by themselves first year, and if you do, you'll have fewer distractions. Only reason i didn't is b/c of money and i knew i'd rather have a few roommates.

I didn't have any trouble finding places to live, a couple of weeks ago when i was still debating my living situation. Living alone costs a bit more, but might be worth it if it saves you roommate grief, and lets you get things squared away and be stress free for your trip. You won't be at home alone that much anyways, probably.

Joe

haha... there are 2 that i know of in oak park, and one in elmhurst. don't change banks. 😉

J244, you'll find a place -- don't stress! the webforum had a lot of people looking for roommates, so you could check there if the roommate list isn't out yet. personally, i'm looking forward to living by myself for the first time -- i figure i'll be less distracted that way. where are you going for your trip, out of curiosity?

I'm heading to Amsterdam for a few weeks to travel around a be a bum...I'm pretty psyched as I've never been! I have no plans for where I will be staying there either...I suppose I should notice the pattern and deal with it! 🙂

Hey guys,
I'm living by myself. I have my apartment squared away...It's in Oak Park right off of Harlem. I am a bit apprehensive about living alone...this will be my first time having an apartment. I'm moving July 2nd I think, and then I'm going to continue working for a while after that. The move hopefully shouldn't be too bad for me considering that I'm living currently with my parents 30-40 minutes away.

Another financial aid question for you all... when you filled out the online form for Stafford loans with THE, did you submit that Master Promissory Note online?

i did... giving my SSN and a few other details worked in lieu of a signature...

woah! so i have been inundated by several packets of information and so forth from Loyola... is everyone as clear as I am with all of the health forms (add sarcastic voice there)... Has anyone already completed these forms?

Hey guys,
Ya, all the stuff we have to do kinda gets me mixed up. I made one list with everything I had to do and the deadlines, so that has helped a lot. I got the health forms last saturday...ends up that my doc's office requires a physical in order to fill out those forms (and I haven't had one in nearly 2 years, great future doctor, huh?)- but they have nothing available until August. I faxed them the forms and they'll see if it's neccessary or if they can squeeze me in.

I move in a bit more than 2 weeks- yikes!

howdy folks... it's getting down to the wire, isn't it? 4 weeks till orientation! 😀

i had fun filling out that learning inventory this morning (i like to let the loyola stuff sit on my desk for about a week before i do anything with it). i'm an ESFJ, if i remember correctly. there are so many forms to deal with, it seems like, but i think the only thing i have left is the immunization/physical thing. i had my physical, but i have to get the immunization records faxed over from student health services to my regular doc in IL, and then start the hep B vaccine before i can send it in. no, wait, i forgot -- i didn't do that online survey. has anyone done that yet?

i STILL haven't found a place to live yet, but i'm not quite in panic mode. i have a feeling i might be commuting from home for a few weeks at first, but it'll all work out eventually. see you all in 4 weeks!!

Hey all!

Which online thing? Did I miss something? I have my physical in a week and a half or so- I hope they fill out the form right after because they'll make me miss deadline. Their office had nothing available for a month. I have to still fill out the personality thing. What comes first, however, is that I am moving on Wednesday! Ack!

hey plucky -
either a pink sheet or white sheet in the last mailing had a website we had to go to and fill out a survey before orientation -- it was some aamc thing. i'm too lazy to bring the sheet to work (where i have more reliable internet access), but i'll get around to it eventually. anyway... good luck moving tomorrow! that's so exciting!

hey guys,
so as for the medical forms and what not, i called them and the nurse i spoke to on the phone said that I didn't need to get a physical and that there is no doctors signatures required on those forms. their biggest concern was my immunization records. did anyone else call and get the same reply?

Cool...I'll look for it, but when you get a chance can you post the website?

Plucky

Hey all,
I am an ESTJ. BTW, I found the website. I am trying to find all the forms we had to fill out and finish with it- excluding the medical. Joy.
