Hey Everyone,

So I have looked up the physician staff directory of multiple hospitals in various departments such as FP, IM, Surgery, etc. There are barely any DO doctors on their list. I would think that there should be approximately a 5:1 ratio of MD to DO considering that there is about 125 MD schools vs 25 DO schools. However, that is not the case. I see very few DOs.

Am I viewing this incorrectly? I looked up hospitals in the Southern California are because that is where I am located.

I think it varies significantly by region. I work at a big research hospital and there are only 2 DOs that I know of. My dad is in Oklahoma and it seems like about half of the physicians are DOs.

I was pretty sure that's the reason. I want to practice in my area so should I be concerned? I'm worried I will not be able to get a job in a decent hospital here.

There are CURRENTLY about 30 DO programs, but in the past, there were very few mostly in areas like Chicago, Oklahoma, Missouri and so on. Many places just relabel everyone to MD. Don't expect to see a huge number of DOs until you get older. Don't be concerned.

Surprisingly, you can easily find D.O.s through google. Just type in "Osteopathic physicians, city and state, D.O."

I was going to say this, only much more sarcastically. Good thing your kindness beat me to the punch 😉

"Please note that the states with the largest DO populations include: Pennsylvania, Michigan, Florida, California, New York, Ohio, Texas, New Jersey, Illinois, and Missouri."

You can find them in the clubs making it rain.

I worked in a very large hospital in Miami, we had a ton of DO physicians. At least half the ER docs were DO's.

There are plenty of DOs in southern California...but if you're stuck I would recommend you look at the VA hospitals. With a tip from my mom who works at one in central California, I've found that they have a pretty good number of DOs (I only shadowed at the Long Beach VA, but I know there is one in West LA and San Diego). In my experience, I've found that the DOs in the VA system are usually more open to letting you shadow than say at private hospitals, since the VA hospitals are teaching hospitals.

FYI: "In the decades prior to 1960 there were more DOs practicing in California than in any other state; they constituted at any given time 10 percent of all its physicians, and perhaps 15 percent of its total population were their patients. The College of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (COP&S) was the first and only school to utilize a large municipal hospital for bedside and outpatient teaching. California DOs generally regarded themselves as the best qualified osteopathic physicians and surgeons in the country... With no other viable strategy left open to them, California MDs came to believe that the only way to destroy osteopathy was through the absorption of the DOs." - Gevitz, The DOs

Nova wut wut!

Worked in an ED with about 100 beds. I wanna say we had about 20ish ED docs on staff. Half of those were DO's. At least 6 of them were from Nova. Nova is no slouch, those DO's are badasses

I never looked into the VA hospitals as I'm not interested in working there. However, do these types of hospitals have a program where if you work there for a certain number of years they payoff all your loans? If that's the case.....I'd be down

I'm not sure, you'd have to look into that. Is there a reason why you're not interested in the VA? Although I'm a bit biased since I was exposed to the VA patient population from a young age due to my mom working there as a physical therapist, I think there are some great benefits to working with veterans and for the federal government (I am aware that there are a lot of people against it, so this is just my opinion). My mom's job has been very stable, and she's had much more flexibility in terms of her work schedule than compared to private offices and other hospitals she worked at when she was just starting off.

Either way, shadowing a DO at the VA is different than being an employee there...so if you're having trouble finding a DO then I wouldn't limit yourself without considering all your options.

I have seen a trend with D.O.s and also what I find myself most interested in.. if you do a search for interventional pain fellowships in the US, you will see a ton of DOs. I think most DOs end up going into PMR because they are so related. Anesthesia has more and more DOs as well. ( for some reason, people are saying gas is less competitive these days). But yes, it's still no surprise that DO is a small small minority. That will probably change once people realize there's no real difference lol.

Regarding your original question about southern cali, try going to the USC hospital directory and you will find plenty of DO's 🙂

It's great to see this list and know that there are DO's in top positions. You mentioned the USC Hospital directory and I looked at a few departments just now. Results:

Anesthesiology: 1/50 is a DO
Family Medicine: 1/21 is a DO
General Surgery: 1/19 is a DO
Internal Medicine: 1/59 is a DO

Total: 4/149 = about 2.7% for the 4 groups
Source: http://www.keckhospitalofusc.org/ [The directory is on the homepage]

Do you really consider this to be plenty of DO's? I realize that some other states may have a lot more DO's than in southern cali. But I'm still surprised by the small percentage of DO's that are in this region.

Do you really consider this to be plenty of DO's? I realize that some other states may have a lot more DO's than in southern cali. But I'm still surprised by the small percentage of DO's that are in this region.

Well then, I stand corrected...I had incorrectly assumed that there would be plenty...but in reality there aren't 🙂

You can find them in the clubs making it rain.

I worked in a very large hospital in Miami, we had a ton of DO physicians. At least half the ER docs were DO's.

There's usually 1 D.O. at a given time where I volunteer in the ER. You might be looking in the wrong places.

As of now I know of 3 DOs that work in my ER. We are small so I consider that to be a good number. One DO is from Nova and she gets made fun of because of how much she knows by sometimes getting too unnecessarily in depth with what she thinks. I guess that's a good thing!

Where are the DO's?

Here they are:

Regarding your original question about southern cali, try going to the USC hospital directory and you will find plenty of DO's 🙂

WOOWW...u jus like **** on that guys face!!!!

ahahhah

interesting

Background

education and training

If I had to guess, I would say that it was because it's easier to go to a DO school in the US than try to get a residency as an IMG. But that must be rough to go back to med school almost 10 years later and do it all over again.

And as far as DO numbers, it matters where you are. If you are in an area with a DO medical school, you will see higher concentrations of DOs there. If you're in a state with no DO school, it's expected that there are going to be fewer there. Remember, a good chunk of graduates from any school tend to stay in that area.

There was literally only 3 D.O.'s in an hour of me and two had closed their practices.

Cool story bro 👍

I may have to go the D.O. route. I personally don't care what degree I have as long as I can treat my patients effectively. I was saying I hope it is not like that everywhere. Don't take it as a personal attack.
