Cerberus said:Wouldnt it be better for everyone if black students looked for schools that had less diversity? Wouldnt it be good if they went to schools like Utah and helped break through the racial barriers? It is my opinion that the main reason for racism is simply not knowing people of other races. It is easy to stereotype minorities when you have had little actual interaction with them. I personally think the guy the a better more unified country is the removal of racial boundaries and viewing one another as a "person" not a "black person" or "white person".
Why is it my "duty" to go and break down racial barriers?? Why do you get to apply and attend schools where you get to feel comfortable and wonderful, but when I go out and seek the same, I am now being racially divisive? Why don't YOU go and break through some barrier and leave me in peace?? This is MY four years. I DO NOT want to have to be the only black person in an entire school or county in order to "break through racial barriers." I do not want to have to prove myself with every exam and USMLE score just to justify my existence at the school. I do NOT want to have to argue with an insensitive medical committee when they want to do something that is inconsistent to my lifestyle. I do NOT want to go to a school and be the torch bearer for my entire race.
That is WHY I contribute to threads like this and that is why I will CONTINUE to contribute to threads like this. Instead of preaching to us and enlighhtening the minority community on your sophisticated and advanced idealogies try and figure out where we are coming from. Breaking down barriers may not be something you ever have to think twice about, but it's not glamorous, and not every minority person should have to do it.
