Hey everybody, first post for me.
I'm applying to Cinci, Carolinas, BIDMC, Harvard, U Mass, Christ-Advocate, U of Chicago, New Mexico, Maricopa, Highland, and probably some others when my student loan check clears. Any advice on an average number of programs students apply to? I was thinking about 15 - 20.

Depends on the quality of the candidate. In essence, you want to apply to enough programs so that you get 10-15 interviews. So if after the first round that doesn't happen, you can submit some more.

Future prospective candidates- don't forget about Grand Rapids, MI. It's a bit of a sleeper program (in med student circles) but ask your school's EM program directors about us. We're one of the oldest programs out there 30 years of EM! Great program. High volume 130K/year with 30% peds. Great city in the midwest with a very nice downtown- best city in Michigan and one of the best in the Midwest! Never get stuck in traffic, easy commutes. Housing is very affordable. Great for those who enjoy the outdoors. 30 minutes from Lake Michigan. Flight program you can moonlight on as a PGY3. Tertiary care hospital that's expanding rapidly. Updated ED. Great technology base. Residency director is very laid back. Residency affliated hockey team. Ability to enhance your Spanish, but 24 hr translators if you no habla espanol. The program really takes care of you. Lots of vacation. 8 hr shifts! Well-rounded. Very good ultrasound didactics/experience. One of the busiest trauma centers in MI- we're typically head-to-head with Beaumont. Residents do very well on the inservice exam. If you want more info PM me. Come see us during your interview season.

I just got a denial from Grand Rapids because I am a DO and they require an internship. I was looking forward to seriously looking at that program so I guess it is only open to MD's or PGY-2 DO's.

Since Michigan tends to be a strong osteopathic state with a lot of postgraduate spots for residency they don't tend to bend the rules much and waive the internship. So if you are a DO in Michigan you will do 4 years of postgrad training- same length for DO or MD (1+3 because of the osteopathic internship) or (1+4 if you'd like to go to U of M). So if you are a DO you have to do an internship first to be considered at Grand Rapids...there's a number of osteopathic hospitals in Michigan that would love to have you for at least one year, if not for the entire residency. Consider applying here if you decide to do your internship. PM me if you want my personal opinion any of the osteopathic facilities and their respective cities in MI.

DocFlanny, I've completed an allopathic internship and have gotten approval of my ACGME Training as an AOA-Approved Internship. This new policy grants AOA internship approval for appropriate ACGME training if certain criteria are met.

If I choose to apply to grand rapids, then what do you recommend I state in my ERAS, and in which section? Or should I just email your PD?

That'd work too...as long as you have an AOA approved internship, even if that's an allopathic internship that meets all the requirements. I hope we'll have a chance to meet you this fall. Good luck with your interview season.

I was so excited about U of A and even "tried" to apply for a visiting student rotation. I was told by the secretary, prog. coord, and med school office that they do NOT recongize Osteopathic doctors has phyisicans. I called all three to varify that this wasn't just a misinformed employee. I was shocked! I can understand if they aren't taking DO's for rotations but don't tell me after all the school I've been through that DO's are doctors!

So, I didn't send them and ERAS app - Oh, well - guess everyone's entitled to their opinion.

TPS, calm yourself, my friend! I talked to our PD this week, and she said she hadn't even downloaded ERAS onto her computer yet, much less looked at any applications. Well, she's looked at mine, but that's only because I physically handed it to her. She said that she doesn't really even start looking at applications until the second week in October, and that this is pretty common practice amongst PDs for EM. In other words, now is not the time for stressing. If it's January and you haven't gotten any EM interviews, then you can stress. But not now.

On the other hand, I've heard programs tell me that they don't bother with dean's letters because they drop too late in the game. I think applying early and often can't hurt you, because the money spent isn't really that much considering it is your career.

BTW, where's the USF love? I'm only halfway through my first full EM month and I've DIRECTED multiple trauma and med rescus, several intubations and lines. As an intern. The emergency experience here is pretty damn great. So you should check us out. Plus - hello - it's freaking Florida!

Having done 2 EM rotations at USF and 2 away rotations, it's hard to think about anything but staying at USF. TGH is a great hospital and the new ED/Trauma Center is coming! The training is on par with programs that have been around for much longer and the faculty is great. And I'll support what Mary Jane has to say, the interns do run traumas, and have lots of procedures.

Dr. Quinn, even though I might be interested in DC, I have to think USF is my #1 right now! Problem is, it probably is for the other 15 or so people in my class that is going into EM as well...but I worked hard, did well, and hopefully it pays off in the end.

I took one look at the 3rd years in action and was sold on this program. I wanted to be that comfortable and proficient with nonstop critical pts, teaching and supervising in a chaotic ED. VERY resident driven, right down to the scheduling. Good fit for those who want to work hard in the hospital but need flexibility for family and friends (read: a lot of time off and plenty of residents to swap shifts with). Much emphasis placed on learning to personally choose how you will or won’t allow that next new journal article to influence your next shift.

With respect to one earlier post, I’ve never had or heard of that experience, and with my former PC education in the Northeast I wouldn’t be able to tolerate it. I’m not sure how to process a post of an overheard conversation. What I can do is offer my name, thoughts and experiences.

Why do you think that's so bad?

They are just telling you specific interview dates and letting you know they have your application, but haven't reviewed them yet. I think that's actually pretty helpful and could help you in planning. Not sure why you're so angry about that.

it's not specific at all! what the hell? "we're interviewing basically during the same season that every other program is." doesn't really help much.

My eyes are very tired of reading websites! I feel like this is a lot of programs, but better to spend a little more now than wish I had.

Here's the list: Maricopa, Highland, Loma Linda, Davis, Irvine, Harbor, San Diego, UCSF, USC, Fresno, Denver, Christ, Cook, U Chicago, U Ill, Indiana, Mass Gen, UMass, U Mich, Hennepin, Mayo, Carolinas, Wake Forest, U NewMex, U Cinci, OHSU, Temple, Pitt, Brown, U Tex-Southwestern, U Tex Houstan, Utah, UVa, Wisconsin, u Arizona...that's as many as I can remember now.

Any other great programs for someone who loves EMS/flying, Wilderness medicine and outdoor activities, international medicine, and just cool places to live with tons of outdoors stuff to do (I really like water-fresh or salt)?????? (Anyone have any input of the Texas programs, haven't heard much from anyone?). 😎

If you're truly gung-ho about wilderness medicine, Stanford probably has the strongest wilderness medicine exposure you can find. Paul Auerbach, Eric Weiss, and Robert Norris are just a few names there that come to mind, all of whom are national leaders in wilderness medicine. Stanford is one of the only places I know of that offers a fellowship in wilderness medicine. I know they have a flight program, but I'm not sure how strong the resident involvement is.

UCSF Fresno also has a nice wilderness medicine niche. The residents there train the "park medics" at Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, and participate in drills/training there.

Just thought I would throw this out there for all you aspiring female ED docs. I rotated through Jacksonville ED program and I have never been so taken aback by the lack of professionalism by the faculty. In particular, I overheard a some inappropriate advances made by a male faculty member in a position of authority. I never would have expected this from this person, but it made me very uneasy and I now question whether or not I am going to apply for residency there. I thought that this kind of stuff only happened on TV. I just wanted to warn all my female friends, but check it out for yourself.

I've never been to Jacksonville and know nothing about their EM program, but you have to wonder when both people coming forward with stories like this (edgirlee and 06tern1) have never posted anything before. What they say may well be true, but with the anonymity provided by forums like these, and especially when they have never posted anything before, it's important to consider the source. People sometimes do some weird things during application season to gain an advantage.

GOod luck this application year. THe USF program is solid training, and having been out as an attending now at a Level 1 center with ~80k visits, I can tell you it prepared me well. Plus, the fact that Tampa Genearl is getting a brand new Trauma Center/ED is gonna be awesome, plus with their increase to 10 residents a year, its gonna be one of the best programs in the country once things get settled with all the new additions!
