If you're not doing this at your own school..are you getting paid. if not, what is your motivation? close to home, prestige, high likelihood of publication etc.
I was thinking about doing some research at the med school back home but i still havent been able to locate any funding for that yet. the school isn't very prestiguos but how do you keep yourself motivated..when you know that you could have been getting paid working at something else. plus getting published is hardly a sure thing either under most circumstances.

I'm doing at research at columbia this summer, which is definitely far from home and I don't have funding for it either. The projects just sounded really interesting, its a great institution and how can you beat NYC? Its going to put me into debt, but thats what student loans are for!

How did you get a student loan for doing research abroad?

To Petra P (and anyone else): I was just wondering - I'm a first-year med student - how did you go about getting that research opportunity? Did you have contacts or did you just approach someone whose work you thought was interesting? I'm visiting family in MI this summer and thought it'd be good to know how to go about with research projects.

I think just about every lab in the US is willing to take a med student to help them out over the summer, especially if they are not going to pay you. Having an extra body puts that lab closer to getting more publications, which allows them to continue to get grants, which allows them to keep their jobs.

HaHa, I wish!!!

I never got specifically student loans to do my research, they're just what I have left over from this last year and what I am going to have to take out next year to pay of the debt I'm going to accumulate this summer

I'm just starting my first year this fall and I called admissions if they would have someone I could talk to regarding summer research. After a few phone calls, I received one from the chair of the Biochem department. He was ecstatic about having me start. Long story short. I'm not getting funding for it-- but I really think it's a wonderful opportunity for future fellowship opportunities. Also, I heard that in order to land a competitive residency position, next to board scores comes research. So really the question is how badly do you want it? 😍

I wouldn't say that research comes next after the boards. I think that your grades/class rank and your letters of evaluation and Dean's letter count much more than any research, especially for the competitive residencies. Research is only something to put you a little above others, but it won't supercede any of those other things.
